About Foing

What is Foing?

Simply stated, foing is a mp3-database aimed at the international pop underground. It's main feature is that it can reproduce a playlist file (m3u or pls format) with mp3's with mp3s located all over the web. In other words, foing is a portal for new, relativily unknown and refreshing songs.
Among other features, users can add songs to the foing database, giving foing an interactive, ever-growing character.

How does it work?

Roughly, the are two way in which you can use Foing. You can either use it actively (by adding mp3's to the database), or passively (just listening / downloading the songs).
In the first case you have an URL of an mp3 located somewhere on the internet, and you want to share that information with more people. You can simply enter the URL in the 'add mp3' dialog box, and fill in the corresponding fields. Once added, the mp3 is associated with a 'pending status'. This means that the administrator still has to check if the file statisfies the conditions he has in mind for his database. If this is the case, it will gain the status 'accepted' or 'downloadable'.
The second case is that you just want to listen to or download the songs that are already in the database. You can fairly easy browse the database, sort and filter it by it's various fields. At any time you can create a m3u or pls playlist file that has exactly the same songs you see when browsing the database. This created file can then be loaded into any media player that supports it. You can also choose to use Foing's own flash player, which also plays exactly the same songs you see when browsing the database.

Where does the word "foing" stand for?

Somewhere in its obscure past, Foing was merely a simple Flash 5 jukebox powered by an MySQL backend. This embryonic version of Foing hasn't been released under any public license, in case you're wondering why you haven't heared of it before.
Anyway, as it was only just a Flash program, and because it was mostly used for music from the underground, it was decided it should be dubbed FOING: Flash music player fOr the InterNational pop underGround. Even though Foing has outgrown this embryonic stage by far, the name was kept.

Adding mp3 files to Foing

What kind of mp3's should I add to Foing?

Basically, you should add files that the administrator won't reject. General guidelines are: legal and non copyright-violating material, full-length songs, reasonable quality, and a genre that fits into the site.

What fields should I fill in?

The following fields are mandatory: the URL (obviously), the artist name and the song title. Apart from those, you should fill in as many fields as you can. Highly recommended are the artist's website and the genre.

Why can't I add mp3's?

Foing has the feature that an administrator can set who's able to add mp3's (either anonymous, registered users, moderators, or administrators). It is most likely that you haven't got sufficient rights to do so.

I just added an mp3, but it doesn't show up. Where did it go?

An mp3 can have different statusses in Foing. A status can be set to be public (i.e. all mp3's in that status can be seen by everyone) or not (i.e. only a moderator can see those mp3's). The newly added mp3's are probably set to a status that isn't publicly viewable; it seems as though they haven't been added at all (that is, if you're not a moderator), while this is in fact the case.

Custom playlists

What's a custom playlist?

A custom playlist is a personal online selection of mp3's from the database. You can choose the songs that are in it yourself. It is stored at the website, so you can access it any time you are online.

How does it work?

First of all you have to create a new playlist. You can make it active by selecting it from the playlists overview. Once you have made a playlist of your own active, you can add songs to it by browsing the mp3 database. Afterwards you can go to 'playlists' and check what songs are in it, how long it is and also remove songs from it.
If you're happy with the result, you can create a m3u or pls file by clicking on the respective 'create' buttons in the 'playlists' screen. Moreover, if you have made a playlist active, the flash player will ONLY play songs from that playlist.
Keep in mind that the m3u and pls links in the page header always create a playlist file that has exactly the same songs you see when browsing the database, irrespective of the fact that you have a playlist active or not.
