This is a bit worrying!!the vin number on my 1979 coupe reads 1Z8749S406947 and I can’t seem to find it on any internet searches as I am trying to find its actual build date!! Can any one out there help please

Hi Nigel, according to my buyers guide the number should be 1Z87(8)9S406947

Also look on driver's door A pillar for a tag. The first 3 digits refer to the day & month, but you need to look up the decoder on line. One of the regulars on here put up the explanation on the old site. Jack Coope?? Maybe

Looking at your sequence number 6947 it should be "B **" meaning September (day,day)1978. An early one.

Thanks for all info,but I think I have found the reason for the fifth figure anomaly,the fifth figure 8 could also be a 4 As this denotes the larger brake horse power optioni

Z8749S406947 but in 1979 there were two fifth digit options in the vin number!
The number 8 denotes the smaller engine option and the number 4 denotes the larger engine option

8= L82 225bhp. There should be L82 badges on the car.Your original question was about build date, which is on the plate on the driver's door post. If you look at my picture, it looks like 125, but it's actually i25 which is 25th May 78. I think yours will be B** or C**, giving you the exact date.
