Next Engine Mod

Morning all!

I know that this topic is done to death on forums in general, but couldn't find a recent one on the C6 page (and following on from the C7 external mod thread), I thought I'd canvas opinion on range of mods people have done to their LS2/3s.

Context for mine....Black Victory Edition (2007) LS2. All stock, apart from LT Headers, X-pipe and Exhaust (all supplied by BillyBoat in the US - exhaust is the Fusion, so able to get dual mode*). The system was also tuned by Wortec/TopCats. Only other mod I've done is painted the brake callipers....!

So, my car can now breathe out, but could do with a deeper breath in (or so I've been told). Doing a bit of research over the last week (more out of interest than immediate action), apart from the obvious CAI upgrade (any thoughts on which one?), the others that seem to be appropriate are:
- High Flow/Ported Throttle Body (e.g. Holley, VMAX)
- Intake Manifold (e.g. Edelbrock, MSD Atomic AirForce)
- Cam (....no idea...!)

That's without doing any sort of induction (and to be fair, keen to keep the car naturally aspirated at the moment). Has anyone done any of the above, or other mods? Thoughts on the parts used, benefits gained etc? Does the increase BHP/RWHP require other upgrades to keep the car usable?

Reckon the above 4 additions would set you back around 2,000, shipped and fitted? Or am I over or under egging?

Cheers!

Pete

* As an aside, I can't recommend the BB Fusion system enough for an LS2 (or 3) - amazing exhaust, and coupled with LT Headers and X-pipe, the sound open is amazing. Closed gives a more aggressive tone to stock, without destroying the environment! I've also found a real world increase in MPG of about 2-3 - except that the overrun is slightly addictive....

Re: Next Engine Mod

Been told the ported throttle body makes no difference Top Cat performance told me this

What you need is a FAST 102 intake and then a remap...

The LS2 is known to have a bad intake and putting in a FAST 102 will help

Interesting on the throttle body. Read a blog (think it was SuperChevvy or something like that) where they tested the RWHP gains from a ported throttle body vs. CAI (and one other mod) in insolation against stock parts, and the throttle body did make a difference. The guys at TC know their stuff though. Looks like the 'Fast 102' is v. similar to the MSD Atomic AirForce. Seen that technically you don't need a remap to make these effective, but you get additional gains by having the engine tuned.

Re: Next Engine Mod

From what I have read the Fast is a good intake and good quality.
The MSD will make more power but the quality out of the box
is shocking apparently. It needs a lot of work to get it right before
you start to port it...... Mamo MSD, lot more bucks tho.

Im going to fit the following CAI when I have my heads changed over
at the beginning of December.
I want it for the looks as much as a performance gain, will also have
it tuned at the same time.

You could lightly port your throttle body yourself if you have a dremel.
Probably could do something with the intake manifold as well.

Looks like a good CAI to be fair. Unfortunately the version for the LS2 engine isn't quite as effective (and doesn't have the additional shroud etc.)....

Are you having a tune specifically as part of installation, or just to get a better performance out of the engine?

Needs to be done as part of the installation.
The heads are street ported and milled 0.030" so need to be
tuned anyway, so getting the best out of it at the same time.

Re: Next Engine Mod

The MSD by far is superior to the FAST..

I've dealt with over 200 C6s from small to big builds and the MSD does outshine it in every way.

On my personal C6Z I ran the car with stock intake on, then installed the MSD on the dyno and ran it again without touching the tune back to back.

Gained a good 25whp Mid-range and 27wtq! That is a lot of power to gain from just an intake manifold with no tuning.

It was a pain in the ass as to put on as it doesn't come "pre-assembled" and you will need to open it up and torque down the bolts again, but I honestly think MSD had done this so you can actually open up the intake and see how large the runners are in there! Lol, plus you don't have to spend extra on changing out fuel rails as stock lines/rails bolt back on.

The MSD intake compared to the LS7 intake is a monster! I'll try attach some pics for a comparison.

I've made a 170.6mph pass in a 1/2mile which I think still stands as the stock block N/A record.
