Harmonic balancer

Iím a bit concerned as my balancer seems to have a slight wobble and thereís lots of horror stories over in the US.
I have a few questions

Does anyone know a garage/price on fitting a new balancer?

Is it worth upgrading the cam while the garage is already working there? (My car will soon be turboíd so a cam may work well also).

Thanks
Steve

Re: Harmonic balancer

Mine fell off last September while I was at a show.
Its quite a time consuming job which includes removing the steering rack.
I put an ATI 10% underdrive pulley on it when it was done.
Not a cheap job.
Up to you on a cam, I didn't have mine changed then.

Thanks, who did the job and how much was the labour?

Re: Harmonic balancer

It was done by AAS in Newcastle.
Think off hand the labour was the thicker end of £700.
If you have had a sort of chirping sound from the engine bay it knackered.
I heard it but didn't connect it.

Re: Harmonic balancer

Doing mine at the moment, new GM balancer and bolt from Rockauto to my door with shipping and rip off tax £100, as for the job it does seem itís a time consuming job as mine is also ProCharged ( loads more shite to remove) and the rack has to be dropped but not removed as I have been informed. But if your a bit clued up definitely doable.
Iíll see how I get on over the weekend!

Re: Harmonic balancer

Very easy to get concerned about this
However because there is rubber in the pulley mounting even a new one will wobble a tiny bit anyway
You should be listening for the belt making a noise and running out of alignment. My c5 pulley moved forwards towards the steering rack. They can also move back !

Re: Harmonic balancer

As above, mine also moved forward (C5) and I only realised when it hit the steering rack! No belt squeel at any stage, original balancer had done just over 50k. Wasn't aware of the issue before buying the car so hadn't been looking for it.

After much messing about trying to get an aftermarket one I went with the OEM one from Eurovettes, Keith often has these in stock ready to go. No need to get hammered with the import tax.

Took mine to my regular garage, talked them through the process from what I'd researched and they were happy to do it, no issues at all.

If you have the space and equipment deffinatley doable at home, just a pain with what you need to remove to get at it.

Well hereís where Iím at, 3 hours and 7 bottles of Stella, rack, sway bar and power steering pump out.
Power steering pump removal not needed but I wanted to replace the plastic pulley with a billet one, now I can finally see the balancer, Yee Haw!!
Steam cleaned it all underneath ready for it all to be put back together but not gonna rush as Iím gonna paint a few things and change the crank seal also whilst apart.
