Under bonnet light

Hi all
Not a very important thing on the whole I know, but when I took possession of my 79 coupe in a box along with other odds and sods was the light for under the bonnet,it’s quite a simple set up except there is a black wire soldered on to the outside of the lamp?there is only one cable coming in to the lamp (the live feed in)so I am assuming the black lead is bolted some where to make earth.Blessed if I can find any where to make up an earth as the lead in question is only about 4/5 inches long with a lug on the end,
Any thoughts out there
Nige

Re: Under bonnet light

It goes under the nearest bolt on the bonnet stay bar to earth through to the chassis.

The switch to operate the light is a mercury type which I assume is part of the bulb holder?

Re: Under bonnet light

I have checked that out and that’s spot on,however the switch is the same as the interior door open/ close operation type sited in a suitable site to be switched on when lifting bonnet but both wires connected to it are dead, and disappear in to the loom. The wire feeding the lamp comes from a perm /live red wire exiting the loom on the inner wing??any one got any ideas ! And thanks for the info/help so far lads

Re: Under bonnet light

I was always concerned that the under-hood lamp did not actually go off when the hood was closed. So, I installed a switch below it, in the power line. At the time it was OK, now I know that neater, smaller rocker-type switches are available which would make the job a bit more professional! But it means I can be sure its off and, I only have it on when I need it.

Both wiring and my switch just may be visible in this photo:

Nigel - the on/off switch you refer to - is it the one half way across the bulkhead near the wiper motor?

I believe that's an alarm switch - isn't it Stephen?

Ooops - I missed this! But Nigel has it all sussed now! Thumbs up

The alarm Surprised Another electrical minefield - the alarm horn was disconnected when we got ours, for good reason it seems, as I'm not sure it isn't always armed! I won't be investigating I'm afraid, even after 28 years of ownership Very Happy

Mines disconnected now. When I first got the car something happened and it went off unexpectedly.
