Ordering Spares From The States

Just some info that might prove useful.

I have in the past purchased service items from UK suppliers, but recently I have been buying some trim bits and some more specialist C4 items.

I have used both Ecklers and Mid West and both gave excellent service with quick dispatch and good tracking details but on all occasions although the items only took a few days to get to the UK they always ended up at Royal Mail Coventry where even after me calling them and chasing, always took at least 7 and often up to 14 days before they would supply the duty costs. So from order to me receiving took at least 14 and usually nearer 21 days.

Last Monday I ordered from Summit Racing in the states and they used DHL, the duty was paid immediately and my order was received by me yesterday.

I had similar experience with Rock Auto. They dispatch very quickly but on the last occasion sent via DHL who shipped to Germany where it seemed to travel between their various depots for more than a week before finally making it to the UK. Delivered by Parcelforce, DHL still listed it as being in Cologne.

The other thing I've notice, Rock Auto don't seem to offer the up-front duty paying which means Parcelforce charge 11:50 handling charge which can be more than VAT/Duty owed.

Just recieved an order from RockAuto; order placed last Wednesday evening picked economy of which there was two, one was duty paid therefore avoiding any Post Office handling charge. Delivered by yodel on the last leg but from the States handled by Drop it Hide it Lose it.

Thumbs up

Re: Ordering Spares From The States

If you choose the correct option on Rockauto you can prepay Vat & duty. I ordered a master cylinder on Friday afternoon and Fedex had it delivered by Monday to the MOT station!!

If I'm not in a hurry I don't prepay it. If after they've delivered it and I'm sent an invoice later for duty & handling charges etc I contest it's too much and I never agreed to pay that amount and state I would never have accepted the parcel if I was asked prior to delivery and would have told them to return it to sender. Suggest they ask the vendor to cover the charges, they say the same. Then no more charges! Thumbs up

Hi to all - I use most US suppliers too - what I find is the fast service from Rock and others is great when in a rush - problem is sometimes you don't alsways know what the final "on the door" cost will be.

Thats why I air freight monthly and can give a MAX landed Uk cost prior to ordering
Also to consider is if the item is damaged or wrong (it does happen) , if direct you have to sort it yourself, if via me then I do all the hassly bits for you

Remember that heavy / large items are v v expensive to use fedex/ups/dhl etc - whereas I have a volumetric calc for my air freight service

Just my input on this subject - happy to help Corvette guys (and I also import other US car stuff too )

Cheers
Keith

Re Rock Auto - I ordered some parking brake shoes with springs from Rock Auto seven days ago, I'm not aware I did anything different to what I normally do if ordering from them, but here's the details:

Tracking was via DHL until Yodel took over following customs clearance at Heathrow. Arrived today seven days after ordering with no extra payment required, so all good.

Ive just got some bits from rock auto. Delivery was about 2 weeks for an order that was about 120. Arrived via royal mail who left a note saying they couldn't deliver it until customs charges and there handling fee had been paid, a further 38..When i got the parcel a few days later it was in a terrible state..Box was battered and ripped open. Looks like someone had opened it to check the contents, even some of the boxes inside were squashed.. luckily the contents were all present and undamaged.

I have found that it is far better to use a supplier that allows you to pay the duty at the purchase stage. My last Opti Spark from Summit only took 4 days to arrive as it comes straight to your door via UPS.
