Refurbishing wheels, factory finish


Hi Guys.

I'm new to the forum, so hello and thanks for letting me on.
I have a white 1989 C4 with wheels that have the locking centre caps. The covers are blistering badly but the wheels themselves are ok. They seem to have a polished rim (long faded !) and a silver/grey coated wheel.
Anyway the refurb guys are not sure if the wheels are powder coated. If we end up doing the whole wheel to colour match everything, the guys say they will have to do all the wheel rather than leaving the rim polished.
Any suggestions on how best to restore the centre caps and if needed the whole wheel?

The car is wrapped up for the winter now, so I have blown up an existing picture which is a bit fuzzy, apologies. Also a good one of the centre cap.

Hi there, I have no experience of C4 wheels so some one else may give you a better scenario than I.

The Centre Caps - to deal with the corrosion the Badges will have to be removed, because filler may well be used to make the surface good, due to this, I think you will be looking at spray painting rather than powder coating.

You need a colour and finish match with the rest of the wheel, so paint the Centre Caps and wheel face at the same time.

If the Rims should be polished to a high lustre, polish them first, then mask them out for the spray painting, forget having spray clear lacquer on the polished Rims to stop them oxidizing - one stone chip and the moisture then gets underneath the lacquer.

Ron, unless you have the skills of a watch repairman and the intricate tools plus the patience, it looks salvageable. Unfortunately, the metal is corroded. It can be sanded and repainted, but a lot of work for such a small item.

Finding like new OEM style like yours, will be a little tough, used ones I saw are in worse shape than yours.

Thanks for your replies, my refurb guys have found a paint match il'm happy with so I'll go with that.Being fairly small they won't cost the earth.

It's my winter project so I have plenty of time and patience, tho I'm just using sand paper and a spray gun, not sure it's watchmaker stuff (?). With shipping and tax to the UK it's worth spending the effort, oh to be able to just order istuff with local taxes and free shipping !
