Hi all
Can anyone tell me what transmission fluid I should use over here for my 1979 coupe auto

GM specified Dexron II at the time. Above all else, its important to get a Dexron fluid.

I did a ton of research when I was about to buy fluid for our '78 to see what the equivalent as now, of if a Dexron II fluid was still available. It is possible to buy Dexron II standard fluids, and I last year I found Opie did a Castrol Dex II fluid, which I bought.

I see that a few other manufacturers do a Dex II fluid that Opie sell.

But, as fas as GM are concerned, the standards of their early fluids have been superseded now by Dexron VI. So, I assume it would be acceptable to use a Dexron VI standard fluid also.

However, looking through the Opie site recently I saw a fluid sold by Granville.

Based on the spec sheet it would seem to be a good choice, possibly better than the Castrol fluid, and I suspect the one that I will buy next time.

What I definitely would not be doing is buying anything synthetic, or something from, say, Halfords! Smile

Whats wrong with synthetic and Halfords?

Synthetic is the standard oil of choice for any specialist application these days on old and new vehicles including trans servicing and my Halfords trade card gets me quite substantial discounts off of any service item. All you need is professional ID and to ask nicely.

Hoselock jetwash 240 for 60, oil filter (any brand) 5.99 for 1.99, Bosch wiper set 12 for 3, 5L Mobil 10w60 (old and/or high mileage) 45 for 28.. etc

Nothing necessarily wrong with synth oils or Halfords, but not in fact, the best choice in this case. I was using Halfords as a generic example, which in fact is what their ATF is, generic.

Having discussed this at length with a Mobil rep the conclusion was that using oils of the same standard as recommended when the car was new was the preferred route. Synth oils were not around (or not common!) in the 68-82 era, so I don't use them in my '78 and wouldn't recommend them to other owners of 68-82 Vettes. The '84 onwards car used synthetic oil for new, so yes, I'd use them in one of those....

Check out Mobil 1 10w60.. Its a track oil and also for older and high mileage cars. My mate uses this in his MGB GT hillclimb car which is often used for touring too. He says its absolutely the best for his old as it stays put, runs quieter and he doesnt need to keep changing it and shows good pressure.

Yes, its a bit dearer but its cheaper in that you dont need to keep changing it like mineral. When i change mine every 15k miles, it gets strained through a muslin filter and used in the MG as its still good to use and our old cars arent so fussy.

Oils have advanced so much these days and our old cars deserve the very best. I think Halfords own brand of oils are made by Comma which isnt a bad thing..

Im told that synthetic is the way to go fir autoboxes these days as it lubricates as good but has much better heat transfer properties which is No.1
