Fluid Change

I am planning a full fluid change for my 98 C5 auto.
Engine oil, auto transmission fluid, diff, coolant & brake fluid.
What brands & grades do people recommend?
What filters do you recommend?

Hi Richard,

I cant tell you what brands or grades to use as they will be different to the C3, you could look up the recommendations from opie oils website Scratchchin

The filter in mine is a Delco filter

I like the Mobil 1 oil filters, but Ive not tried sourcing one over here yet. I also stick to the factory fill Mobil 1 oil, but I am sure there are several good alternatives - Opie oils would recommend something.

As for brake fluid i would probably want to use a DOT4 fluid, due to its higher boiling point, although the manual for my 2001 says DOT3 only. I don't think you can switch to DOT5 as it is quite different in composition to DOT3/4. Although apparently DOT5.1 is the same composition as DOT3/4!

Not sure on coolant, tranny and diff. I would stick to the grades defined in the manual.

+1. Auto is especially fond of exactly the right fluid.

Regarding the brakes, there's no point fiddling about with fluid unless you change the front rotors. C5 brakes are fine for normal road use but you'll cook them in seconds with any sort of track or enthusiastic use.

Re: Fluid Change

Thanks for the advice!! It sort of lost its way a little bit & ended up with a brake disc change.
I was armed with the info in the hand book regarding viscosities / grades.
I have opted for the following:
Millers oils for the following:
Transmission: Millermatic DM
Diff: CRX LS 80W90
I have selected a Delco 5/30 synthetic engine oil.
Filters – K&N for air & oil.
I am still searching for a Dexcool compatible antifreeze but will probably end up refilling with more Dexcool.

I've used K&N oil filters (HP-1007) - seem to work well - but have also used Fram extra guard PH3506
Oil - Valvoline Syn Power, meets GMs specs
You will find it very hard getting a Dex-Cool substitute, I searched for ages and went through the makers Zerex (valvoline) in the states who went through the europe suppliers to get this response:

Zerex is a product from the USA, we have the same product here called:

Valvoline AntiFreeze Extreme (do not mix with normal AF)

Kind regards,

Arie

When I looked in detail, however, I could not get it from any of the suppliers they recommended so paid extra and got some real Dex-Cool from a USA parts supplier near me.

Trans - plain old Comma.

Auto change is a real pain - good luck - Andrew
