Door solenoid???

I have my door panel off and the regulator out at the moment as I am fitting new rollers.

I've noticed that there is a solenoid which has the lever disconnected from the lock release. There are also a couple of wires that attach to the key lock. I'm assuming that these are some sort of electric locking system that is not working. Before I put everything back I was just interested what these items are meant to do and whether I can test them.

Any ideas??

I have a 1979.

Forgot to mention that I am referring to the drivers door if that makes any difference.

Re: Door solenoid???

sounds like the central locking system, mine was incredibly 'iffy' so disconnected years ago, hey, we only have 2 doors so is central locking really a necessity Confused

Re: Door solenoid???

The solenoid is part of the power locking the wires on the Lock barrel are for the anti theft they connect to a spring loaded switch If the car is locked with the key it sets the system , if as is easy the thief rips out the barrel the spring is released and off goes the alarm

Re: Door solenoid???

Thanks for the responses.

I have been having a fiddle with these this morning.

So I assume that what should happen is that when you unlock one door the other door unlocks?? I found that if I put 12v from the battery onto the solenoid then it does move so that seem so to be working but like you say with two doors it hardly seems worth bothering with.

I have also found that if I use the key to lock and unlock the door I get a clicking sound from under the dash somewhere so I assume something is happening with the alarm but it has never gone off so I perhaps the sounder has been removed.

Both items for another time!

Re: Door solenoid???

Not quite
When you unlock one door you are doing so manually ,both doors do not unlock like modern cars ,when operated by the switch then you unlock both doors not by the key

Re: Door solenoid???

i see it now.

The small switch in the door panel is not connected on mine so I have been ignoring it but I see that it allows you to lock and unlock both doors. I had a similar arrangement on my Mk1 MR2 which again did not seem that useful considering the passenger door was so close. Thanks.

The system will not work unless everything is connected and there are on broken wires

Re: Door solenoid???

Managed to get the drivers side working but found that with the addition of the solenoid and all the other linkages meant that the key became very hard to turn in the lock. I was worried that the extra strain on the key would mean that there would be a real possibility of breaking the key in the lock which would be a headache I don't want.

I have therefore disconnected the solenoid but may look to get the passenger side working when I get around to doing that door.
