HUD not so bright

Recently I noticed I had to turn my HUD brightness setting all the way up to max and i am still struggling to see it when the sky is bright.

I am sure that last year I used to run with it not much more than half way up??

Any ideas where to look?

Re: HUD not so bright

The HUD unit projects from the opening in top of the dash. Maybe you might want to clean it!
Not sure if there is any way to change a bulb if it isn't working without removing all of the dash DIC unit.

Re: HUD not so bright

Dirt? In one of MY cars??? Surprised

Bulb???
It's an LED display. Rolling Eyes Or is it back lit by a bulb??? Confused

I am thinking maybe the circuit board needs removing and re-soldering just like the climate control head unit?

Or maybe it is the dimmer control circuit?

Anyone seen or heard of this before?

Hi Roppa, I had to re-solder the 8 resistors on my aircon printed circuit board (C5 2000 ) due to failing solder ( which GM's suppliers were forced to use on the change over to lead free solder !!.) Made the readout go fainter until it couldnt be read at all. fairly easy job for a numbnuts like me. Got step by step details from Corvette Forum in the US
Sounds like could be a similar prob?
Try the easy stuff first of course. As im sure you will

Have you checked out on the Corvette forum US side ?. I have always found that if you have a problem. someone will have had it before and left some excellent pointers along with pics showing DIY fix etc .

Good luck. Cool

Re: HUD not so bright

I think it might be the dimmer slider as the brightness jumps a bit when I fiddle with it. I will try squirting some cleaning solvent in it and see if that does the trick.

Re: HUD not so bright

If the projector is still pushing out its full "ergs" and the slider is fully up, the only other parameter which affects the level is the ambient light sensor. Is it blocked, dirty or covered?

I wasn't aware that it changed it's brightness in relation to ambient light? It never has since I bought it. I assumed that was what the dimmer slider was for.

I will look into that. Ta.

But I wish people would stop using that word "dirt". It is not applicable to any car I own. Wink

Re: HUD not so bright

Possibly not too helpful, but to make the observation that whilst my 140K miles C5 needs serious work behind the dashboard to get all the heating and aircon lights working again, my HUD continues on unabated. And that is with an expensive but much cheaper "ordinary" windscreen replacement for a very expensive "HUD" windscreen.

Anyone got a URL for that Corvette Forum article on doing the solder joints behind the dashboard?

Hi Try this link on this website which I think I put on a link also to the US Corvette forum website. Which is an excellent post with step by step photos and instructions to do the job.

If I can do this job, most folks can, Im a "numb nuts" Rolling Eyes with a soldering iron. It will save you mega bucks too. Thumbs up
