Donington Historic Festival Sat 5th and Sunday 6th May 2012

Calendar Event: 05 May 2012 - 06 May 2012

Donington Historic Festival 2012

Donington Park Racing Ltd, Castle Donington, Derby, DE74 2RP

The first Donington Historic Festival took place in 2011 where the race action saw more than 300 historic racing cars from the 1930s to the 1980s, battling for victory. There were Group C Le Mans sportscars, GT40s and Ferrari GTOs, Touring Cars from the 70s and 80s, pre-War Bentleys, Bugattis and Alfa Romeos and much, much more.

As well as watching these icons fight it out on track, spectators could wander round the race paddocks, enjoying free access and getting up close to the cars and stars. Plus there were plenty of off-track attractions and live action – including legendary Group B rally cars, historic karts, autojumble and memorabilia stalls, cafés, bars and food outlets – and extensive club displays of classic cars.

We can expect more of the same for 2012, as well as plenty of new attractions, and I am liaising with Donington and will be updating this page with details nearer the time.

What’s the Festival car club package?

1: A two-for-one advance ticket deal for CCCUK members.

New for 2012 the two-for-one deal applies to one-day tickets as well as to weekend tickets. This means that CCCUK members get two £18 advance purchase day tickets – or two £30 advance purchase weekend tickets – for the price of one; a very significant saving on the on-the-gate price of £25 per ticket per day or £40 per ticket for the weekend. And, as a further bonus, members pay just one modest £1.50 booking fee, regardless of how many tickets they book.

2: Exclusive, free car club parking in the infield.

For each pair of tickets bought through the car club offer, a car pass giving access to the exclusive car club infield display parking area will be issued (please note, only cars which are club-appropriate are allowed into the area).

I have arranged for the CCCUK to have its given its own dedicated, sign-posted parking area.

3: Invitation to take part in the track parades.

On the Saturday and Sunday of the Festival, a limited number of cars from car clubs that have registered with Donington will be invited to go out on the track and take a turn round the circuit. At the 2011 Festival this was the highlight of the weekend for those members who took part, and I look forward to seeing huge smiles on the faces of club members again in 2012.

4: Entry to the Donington Museum, Race Collection. Your entry ticket gives you free admission to the Donington Race Collection

I will be at the Festival as the CCCK representative will be responsible for deciding which members go out on track.

I have registered the CCCUK as a participating club, and soon we will be allocated a Club Discount Code in order to take advantage of the club discount ticket offer, which I will publish here, distribute to the Reps, and publish in Vette News

Please note:

In order to reserve us a space of the correct size at the Festival I need to know the numbers, so if you are coming to the Festival will you PLEASE email me at:

events @ corvetteclub.org.uk

....telling me on which days you are attending. Please also indicate if you wish to take part in the track parade

What's the deadline for ordering the 2-4-1 tickets Dave? I'm going to be re-joining the club this year so will have membership sorted for this event.

Not sure, I think last year it was about 2weeks before, but you need to remember that the club membership year doesn't start until May 1st, so you'd need to buy a half year membership before then to qualify. Will try and find out. Dave

Stirling to Drive GP-Winning Jaguar at Donington Historic Festival

On Sunday 6th May 2012 at the Donington Historic Festival, Sir Stirling Moss will take to the track in the actual Jaguar C-type he drove to victory in the 1952 Reims Grand Prix for sports cars, exactly 60 years ago. But, impressive as it was, his 1952 victory was more than a mere race win. This was the first-ever race victory in a disc-braked car, a landmark event which cemented the Jaguar marque’s reputation for innovative engineering and helped to make disc brakes the universal technology they are today.

The Donington Historic Festival will see the history-making car and driver reunited, as Sir Stirling – who only retired from racing last year, aged 81 – completes some demonstration laps for spectators. Stirling will be signing autographs for fans during the day, as well as driving the world-famous C-type, chassis XKC 005 (instantly recognisable by its original registration number of MDU 212), in its 60th anniversary year.

No doubt it will be a less demanding day for Sir Stirling than it was at Reims in 1952, when the heat was so intense and the competition so fierce that he was near to collapsing after taking the chequered flag. Jaguar’s team manager at the time, ‘Lofty’ England (later to become Chairman and Chief Executive of Jaguar), reported that while the National Anthem was played in honour of Stirling’s victory, the team helped him to stand while they poured a bucket of water over him to keep him conscious.

When not behind the wheel of the C-type or signing autographs at Donington in May, Sir Stirling is likely to pay particular attention to one of the races on Sunday morning: the Stirling Moss Trophy for pre-1961 sportscars and sports-racers, launched two years ago by historic race organiser Motor Racing Legends with the full support and involvement of the great man himself. The race series made headlines when Sir Stirling generously presented the winners with a priceless piece of silverware: the actual trophy he won for his first-ever Formula 1 Grand Prix win – the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree. Other races at the Donington Historic Festival include Group C sportscars, Historic Touring Cars, sportscars and Formula 2; not to mention the hugely popular E-type Challenge and the ‘Mad Jack’ for pre-War cars.

Plus there is plenty of off-track action as well, such as the huge number of car clubs turning out to display their cherished classics for the delight of spectators, and enjoying some parade laps on the Donington circuit. All this at arguably Britain’s best spectator circuit, and with ticket prices kept low enough to encourage whole families:

2012 advance ticket prices
Saturday 5th May – £18 (£25 on the day)
Sunday 6th May – £18 (£25 on the day)
Weekend ticket – £30 (£40 on the day)
Children under 16 – Free

Plus… two-for-one ticket deals for CCCUK members (see below)

Entry tickets and camping tickets can be bought via www.doningtonhistoric.com and through the 24-hour ticket hotline 0844 873 7355.

Don't forget the CCCUK Buy one get one free ticket offer

The unique Club Discount code for this event can be found in Vette News or on this member's only thread:

Re: Donington Historic Festival Sat 5th and Sunday 6th May 2012

Please note: The cloisng date for ADVANCE tickets for this event is 2nd May

If you use the club discount code

( available on this thread http://www.corvetteclub.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=87453#87453 )

you WON'T get the club discount as this expired on the 20th but you SHOULD get an Infield pass which will allow you to display your vette on the field

HOWEVER I would advise that you do this by 30th April

as the Festival organisers will be allocating space for us on the basis of the numbers of club members they have issued passes to by the 30th

If you buy tickets on the day, you won't get a club infield pass
