Steering Wheel Position Sensor - Reset?


Just had steering rack removed for new harmonic balancer install. However, mechanic was unaware of need to not move the steering wheel when column disconnected from rack! So now I'm getting a message to say that the "active handling is warming up" and this won't go away, due to the swps thinking that the wheels aren't pointing forwards.

Does anyone know if it's possible to tell the swps that everything is now ok and it can forget what it knew? Maybe the message goes away after a number of successful journeys?

Can anybody throw any light on this....?

If you have access to a tech 2 then you can see the counts on the SPS, then re-align accordingly - I think it has to go to zero but cant remember

I would guess a google search may reveal some interesting videos (do use sexy words !!!)

Please be ultra carefull here as damage can be done to the airbag ribbon connector at the steering wheel if rack has been reftted off centre take care back to mechanic and get him to refit should not need resetting if installed back correctly

My thoughts exactly.

Just disconnect it again and center the steering wheel.

The problem is that the steering wheel IS centered, however when disconnected from the rack it spins freely BUT there is only one position where it is 'right'. I have borrowed a 'fancier than normal' OBD2 reader (Autel MOT Pro) and discovered that you can get a live reading of the analog voltage being monitored by the steering wheel position sensor. Apparently, 2.5v is what should be read when the steering wheel is in the 'right' position (changes by approx 1v per revolution).

Now I'm beginning to sound like an expert I'll defer from posting any more until I try and reposition the steering wheel vs the steering rack tomorrow, using the 2.5v perceived wisdom... here's hoping, fingers crossed. Scratchchin

OK, so that plan didn't work. Couldn't successfully read the voltage from the SWPS using the gizmo, but of course it worked fine once I got home and tried again! Grrr.

Oh, and I also have a B0026 DTC code ("Driver Frontal Deployment Loop Open Circuit") which I'll need to understand better before I do any more... Banghead

OK, an update:

Re-tried the OBD2 reader on the steering wheel position sensor - it turns out that the engine must actually be running to get a valid voltage reading from the SWPS. Once the engine is running you can disconnnect the steering column from the rack at the knuckle joint under the hood and turn the steering wheel until you get a reading of around 2.4 volts. Your steering wheel is then correctly centred. Thumbs up

The remaining airbag problem (B90026 DTC) is probably a result of damage inflicted on the clockspring located directly behind the steering wheel and airbag. Apparently if you turn more than three revolutions you can break this, so we have another on order.... N.B. when replacing this item there is a very similar centering process as when you disconnect the other end of the column! Basically you have to leave the steering wheel centred and make sure you put it all back in exactly the same position.

I'll update this thread again once we are in a position to say for sure what the problem with the airbags circuit is...

Ps I actually have a working c5 corvette clock spring here if it helps second hand if ur local to me feel free to collect
