613 HP - and no meths

I spent a pleasant afternoon with fellow Vetteheads, Pete and Paul at Brooklands College playing on their dyno.

This was the first opportunity to see what the pro-charger could do along with the Methanol injection. The previous unblown figures were showing around 433 hp- that was with the long tube headers and vararam system.
The Brooklands set up is very impressive with loads of state of the art kit there, plus some extremely knowledgable lecturers.
I left the methanol system on for the first full run and the engine pulled 532.2. not bad - about 32% improvement. However there was a very strong smell of unburnt methanol and fuel.
The second run was with the meths switched off. Wow, what a difference 613.1 hp !! with only 5 lbs of boost. Amazed, if slightly confused, I switch the meths back on and pulled "only" 532.2.
A look at the a/f ratio told the story. The car was overfueling and this was being excerbated by the meths which injects close to WOT.
The non meths run allowed the management system to lean the mixture and allow the engine to burn more fuel.
Although I was running a supercharger tune I've never altered it to suit the meths.
It was suggested to me that if I could lock off the blower dump valve for a short period(less than 10 seconds) and then inject the meths, that 613 hp could be exceeded. How long my pistons or transmission would last is a different question- I can't get the existing power on the road so why would I need more horsepower ? um, don't answer that.

Here's the preliminary chart.Image

Re: 613 HP - and no meths

I'm using the stock Z06 camshaft. The only modifications are h.d.injectors, the headers, cooler plugs, the inter-cooled Pro-charger and the methanol injection system. The chip was reprogrammed with a Diablo tuner ( which had missed off the rev limiter) and later Richard Ingram sent me an updated tune once I had logged some runs using EFI live.

Re: 613 HP - and no meths

The great thing about the Pro-Charger is that the power is very manageable. At below 2500 rpm it rumbles along quite happily, just like a normally aspirated car. Hit the loud pedal and things go a bit hazy-mostly the tyres Laughing and that's the big problem. Big numbers mean nothing unless you can get the power onto the tarmac. Finding that thin margin between roasting your tyres and toasting your clutch takes a heck of a lot of practise. I'm happy to stay in the roasting camp - it's a bit cheaper! Smile

Stick in a good blower cam , uprate the valve springs and rocker arms and you will gain loads more power with a much better arc on the torque curve thus making it far more managable to use and increase longevity on other components and drive train.

Re: 613 HP - and no meths

You're absolutely right - but then the pistons, rods, crank and the clutch will need upgrading, the rear end will need beefing up and I still won't be able to get the power onto the ground!!

One step at a time I think. I'll get the tune sorted first, see what's the max there before more radical engine surgery. Yes

Congrats, Mike. A very impressive figure. Is Sue aware that your car is one of the most powerful in the UK? Wink

I did tell her and she was massively impressed, as you can imagine. I think she then asked me if I had remembered to buy some buffalo milk on the way back from the dyno....... Wink

How did the shot blasting go?
