Body shop

Hi All
Just thought I would let you know that after much searching I have found what looks like a good body shop near me,I have just dropped my 79 coupe around for a repaint ! Now , I won’t go any further in praising them or possibly telling any one who is interested in the whereabouts or name of a good sympathetic body shop until I see some results, but they all seem really interested about the car etc and are very enthusiastic
Regards nige

Nigel, no idea if you're anywhere near me, but I'll after someone to paint my car next year, so I'll be interested in who you used and also what it costs.

Just be 100% sure Nige that you are happy that the bodyshop knows their way around glass fibre vehicles (and I don't mean a dodgy respray on a Reliant three wheeler or a touch-up job on a Lotus) - I'm talking about skilled, knowledgeable craftsmen working on 'real glass' bodies - if they get it wrong and get moisture trapped in the 'glass when prepping - you'll pay yer money for a nice, seemingly high quality paint job only to find a few months later a micro-blistered surface after the car has been left in damp and cold conditions...........

Understand your point chair
But when your pride and joy is not as good as you can make it I feel you have to do the best you can within what ever restraints you might have be they financial or otherwise .When I first set out to locate a body shop I approached companies that specialised in fibreglass etc but with out fail the prices they quoted started at 10,000 pounds (and this could climb considerably )they told me confidently, and that’s with me taking off bumpers ,doors and all fittings and refitting after the paint work.So I began looking and found these lads who seemed not to be scared of fibreglass and welcomed the challenge and their quote of between 4 and 5k was what I considered within the human range!!
Kind regards Nige

A foot note lads and ladies
Just had a call from body shop and they are confident that a bad paint job in the past seems to be the problem and not specifically a fibreglass issue!the microblistering is on metal parts painted as well as fibreglass

Here's hoping you get a good job. If anyone else living in South Glos needs bodywork or respraying I can recommend JB Motors between Bristol and Gloucester. They carry out Classic restoration as well as day to day modern work. Jerry understands the problems specific to glassfibre - he did a superb repair job on my (glassfibre) Daimler SP250 and as soon as I can get it ready he'll have my C3 to respray.

One of our Essex members has just had a major paint job done of his '78 (or '79) - in silver with its various coach-lines etc this was superbly executed by Custom Exotics (Harlow based) for a couple of £K less than £10K (I'm led to believe) - car was good enough not to need a 'body-off'.
Irrespective of who you use - ask for them to arrange for you to view a 'glass vehicle they have painted.

Yes sadly you do get some horror stories with vettes, ovens to hot and warping bodies, micro blistering etc etc, hopefully youve found some one that will do their homework before painting it, moisture is the big issue and teh cause of micro blistering, what ever you do dont ever put it in an outdoor car cover as this tends to cause them to sweat and micro blister, had this on my viper
