Gearbox leak on 76 coupe

Hi all the car was driven home after purchase just fine (100 plus miles)but after being parked up for a month or so I checked the drip tray beneath the car and found at least a quart of gearbox fluid had dripped down from what looks like the dip stick where it seems to enter the auto transmission.I contacted the previous owner and he said he fitted a new tube and he thought it may be leaking owing to the grommet on the tube,my question is can that much fluid leak because of this problem and should I be looking for an original tube as the one fitted looks like a chrome after market hobby and is it a job to replace it for a enthusiastic idiot like me or can a reseal of original tube be an alternative route
Any thoughts or advice as always greatly recieved
