It was our local Queen Square Car Club monthly breakfast meet at Eastwood Park this morning but rain looked threatening and I chickened out. In fact the rain held off so I should have braved it.
These meets often have a 'theme' although anything 'interesting' on four (more or less) wheels is welcome. Regretting my cowardice at not turning out today I reminisced in my easy chair on the meeting back in June when the weather was balmy and the theme was american cars.....
Great day, and my own '71 'Vert puts in brief appearances at 0:58 and 2:44.
Although we had no rain this morning it's since been pouring all day - I've a feeling summer is definitely over....

Changed the battery in my '71 today. Old one no longer holding charge for long so ordered a replacement from Tayna yesterday at 3:00 pm and had it delivered today at 9:15 am - excellent Tayna service as usual.
Old battery was american side terminal and although I'm not enamoured of side posts in general, since I didn't feel like changing my battery cable terminations, I ordered a side post replacement. Both old and new batteries are Enduroline which are Tayna's 'own' brand but I chose a replacement that is slightly longer and has a higher CCA of 740 A as opposed to 510 A and a C20 capacity of 74 Ah instead of 60 Ah.
When it arrived I was surprised to see that the new battery while side terminal connection, also had top 'cone' terminals as well....
I'd fitted the old battery with a screw type isolator.....
...to make isolating the battery easier when working on the electrics. In practise using it was only slightly easier than disconnecting a cable and it had been quite unreliable in making a secure connection. Since I now have top terminals as well as side ones I'm reconsidering using these instead since access will be easier and connection to top posts I find simpler and more reliable; isolation when needed can be achieved simply by unclamping the earth lead connector. To avoid re-terminating the battery leads I could use adaptors such as these....I'll give it some thought.
Still, at the moment my new battery is spinning the engine over very energetically and starting is no longer a 'maybe' ?

Be careful to tighten the green screw-up as tight as you can. The electrical 'contact' points on the screw and associated parts are quite small and are being asked to flow quite a high current (especially on extended crank-overs when looking for oil pressure before firing-up). If not tight they may heat-up and burn the electrical contact area. Ask me how I know!

Tayna certainly are top trumps when it comes to service . Back in August the battery I bought from them for the C3 less than 12 months ago let me down twice in the space of a week after a recharge . I was reasonably certain I did not have power drain on the battery so phoned Tanya to discuss the `suspect ` battery and they told me to return it for testing and if defective they would reimburse me . Being desperate for a reliable battery as Silverstone Festival was only a few days away , I bit the bullet and ordered a new one which was delivered the next day . I used the packaging to return the suspect battery by their courier free of charge and received a full refund within the week so the battery was obviously duff . Me too. I did wonder if perhaps the manufacturer had decided to use a 'universal' dual terminal casing and maybe only connected the one pair as appropriate; so I stuck a voltmeter across the top posts and sure enough, they're all live.
This has got to be a useful feature even if using the side terminals for connection. On the C3 the battery lives in a fairly close-fitting 'hole' behind the driver's seat and although I've never had to do it, it did occur to me that connecting leads to the side posts for a jump start is not at all easy. With top posts available as well, connecting jump leads or a charger is going to be a doddle!

When my C3 was delivered to me from America, it came with a "dual post" battery (top and side posts). I'd never seen one before. Sadly, the battery died as it was in a mechanics garage for a long time and they let it go flat from not disconnecting it. I now have an old battery in the car they had kicking around the garage, and its lasted for 8 years - I always leave the battery disconnected using a quick release clamp.

The dual post batteries are not new, mine's been on my C3 for at least 5 years and also supplied by Tayna

Yeah when mine came from America in 2016 it came with dual posts too.

Now hold on a minute there, I dont want to be branded a technophobe!Seems like Chevrolet (the member, not the Company) and I are the only ones still unaware of the march of progress....
I've never owned a C2 or C3 that looks like the candidates for those two sets of terminals batteries. Have only owned a C4, C6 & C7.

Been out for a whiff of smoke and steam today as a bit of light relief after days of grappling with replacing the front wheel bearing assemblies and CV joints on my Jeep Grand Cherokee . One CV joint was so seized on the splined shaft that even lots of heat and a 10 ton hydraulic press wouldn`t budge it !! So off I set on this beautiful sunner Autumn morning to see the very latest steam loco to join the fleet of steam locos 
certified to operate on the national rail system . This was the O.V.S . Bullied designed `West Country ` class Pacific No. 34028 ` Eddystone` that was hauling a special charter train from Manchester to Reading and was passing through the impressively long and deep Roade Cutting not from where I live . She was going well up the final stretch of an unrelenting 7 mile climb at a gradient of 1 in 100 all the way from Northampton station to the site of the long gone station in Roade village . She was the first of her particular type of `West Country ` class to be withdrawn from service in 1964 and after languishing in a scrap yard for a few years before being rescued in what turned out to be a 60 year restoration process that saw her steamed for the first time in 2024 . So dear reader , fear not if you think your Corvette restoration is taking longer than you thought !!!

With the approach of winter the Car Show season is largely over but our local Queen Square Breakfast meets carry on throughout the year. To offset the possibility of inclement weather they shift venue to a site with enormous barns capable of housing several hundred cars....
November's meet actually enjoyed sunshine so most of the cars stayed outside. The meet is used to hosting Ferraris, Lambos, Bentleys, Porsches and a wide range of other exotica but this month we welcomed our first Koenigsegg.....
(centre if you haven't seen one before )
These exotic birds - it's the first time I've seen one in the flesh - rarely turn up a local club meets and not surprisingly it attracted considerable attention!
Yank attendance was down a bit this month but I did spot this white C3.....
....that I could have kept company with my '71 but this month I'd decided to air my 'Stang instead....

This week I decided to start putting an exhaust system together - still work in progress as you can see from the pic.
They say confession is good for the soul but is anyone else prepared to admit to putting the downpipes on the wrong side of the engine (ie putting the left bank downpipe on the right bank and vv) and wondering for a couple of days why nothing makes sense? It works so much better when they are on the right way round.

After a rather shitty few weeks of hassle it was great to get out early on today`s cold and misty , moisty morning for one of my favourite local walks beside the Grand Union Canal not far from home . Simon & Garfunkle`s 1966 hit song ` Hazy Days of Winter ` came to mind as I did the 5 mile walk in very atmspheric light conditions . Within an hour or so on the way back the sun had burnt off the thick mist and totally transformed the views . The swans were swimming , the squirrels were squirreling and everything in the Garden of Life was lovely !
