Can anyone help with C4 tyre advice. Mine are 255 50 16. These are very rare and very expensive. Can another size of tyre be used instead. Mine have loads of tread, but are badly cracked.

Unfortunately not, I had the same problem earlier in the year. I was lucky enough find a set of 4 Toyo R888's on eBay for £550.
I think Eurovetts can import tyres.
Changing the wheels is the best long term solution if you don't mind not keeping it stock, this will give you more choice and lower tyre costs.

IF the only change is the width over the stock ones are

This would affect a bit what the speedo reports in MPH and also affects if auto tranny shift points
If so, could correct by changing the gear at end of speedo cable at tranny or the inner gear in tranny

Best is with a GPS that also reports speed and compare it with what your speedo reports to see what the difference is.

From around 89 the C4 moved to 17” wheels with 275/40 tyres. Still not a common tyre, but there are these Nankang tyres available at approx £100. Not the best brand but reviews are good. I changed my ‘87 onto ‘89 wheels many years ago and probably a lot available 2nd hand in the US. Keith could probably source some?
You do need spacers though - approximately 2cm thickness. Nankang Sportnex NS-2 275/40 R17 W tyres | Blackcircles.com
