Featuring Troop D, who were informed of a pursuit involving the West Memphis Police Department. Troopers D. Cheers (D-25), J. Byrd (D-26) G. Fultz (D-20) and Sgt S. Roberts (D-4) who all attempt to stop the corvette by boxing them in and eventually a TVI Report:
On December 7, 2024, I, TFC. Garrett Byrd, along with other troopers, was patrolling on Interstate 40 eastbound between the 280 and 284-mile markers.

At approximately 9:49 PM, Sgt. Steven Roberts advised that West Memphis Police Department pursued a white C7 Chevrolet Corvette, and they still had sight of the vehicle heading towards our location. TFC. Donnie Cheers observed the Corvette traveling at a high rate of speed when it approached and passed him around the 280 or 281-mile marker.
I was on the shoulder at about the 282-mile marker when I witnessed the Corvette pass by me and a civilian vehicle at speeds well over 100-miles per hour.

I activated my emergency equipment and began to attempt to catch up to the Corvette as Trp. Gunner Fultz, who was ahead of me and the Corvette, attempted to slow the Corvette, allowing me to close the distance between the suspect and me.
The Corvette continued to drive recklessly and was able to get around Trp. Fultz and gain speed once again.
As I continued to pursue the Corvette, it caught up to Sgt. Roberts and a tractor-trailer.

Sgt. Roberts was successfully able to slow the Corvette enough to allow me to perform a Tactical Vehicle Intervention on the vehicle, causing the suspect to lose control. The Corvette struck the landing gear area on the left side of the trailer on the tractor-trailer before spinning and striking the concrete divider.
The Corvette came to rest on the outside shoulder with the driver’s door against the front of my vehicle.

At first, the driver was showing his hands, and the driver side window was busted out of the Corvette to allow the driver to exit the vehicle while keeping his hands visible. He was advised to get out of the car but did not attempt to. He also appeared to reach down between the door and the seat.

Officers then attempted to assist him out of the window, but he did not appear to be putting in any effort himself and at one point told officers to “hold up”. Trp. Fultz deployed the K-9 on the driver, and he was continuously given commands to get out of the vehicle, but he continued not to put in any effort to do so. As Trp. Fultz and the K-9 attempted to get the driver out of the vehicle, the driver was observed reaching towards his right side.

The driver also pressed the accelerator, as if he was trying to drive off while officers were around the vehicle. Officers were eventually able to remove the driver from the vehicle and get him onto the ground. After a brief struggle, officers were finally able to take the driver into custody. Once the driver was in custody, I called for an ambulance for him.

The driver was identified as Christopher Najera, 02/18/1992, of Memphis, TN. A return, on the Corvette’s VIN, showed the vehicle to be stolen. Ammunition was found, although a firearm was never located. Officer Justin Clark with West Memphis Police Department discovered a white powdery substance in a folded one-dollar bill located in Naverja’s wallet, and a field test indicated that the substance was cocaine.

EMS evaluated Naverja before he was placed in the back of my vehicle. Once he was in my vehicle, I advised him of his Miranda Rights. A-1 Towing arrived to tow the Corvette and I left the scene to transport Naverja to Baptist-Crittenden Hospital in West Memphis.

At the hospital, Naverja appeared very groggy, and would doze off while staff and troopers were speaking to him. He did admit that he uses cocaine, when asked by TFC. Cheers. Naverja was treated and discharged.
I transported him to the Crittenden County Jail.
At the jail, another folded one-dollar bill containing a white powdery substance was located in Naverja’s wallet.

Naverja’s license showed to be revoked in Tennessee for DUI. Naverja was booked on the following charges: Felony Fleeing, Theft By Receiving, Possession of Cocaine, Reckless Driving, Driving on a DUI Revoked License, DWI Drugs,

Refusal to Submit to Arrest, and Speeding. Drug evidence is being sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for testing. The tractor-trailer, struck by the suspect vehicle (Vehicle 1), is listed as Vehicle 2 in the incident report. Vehicle 2’s trailer is listed in the remarks. Vehicle 2 Owner Information: Joe Atenco Tam trucking 2034 Port Louisiana Laredo, TX 78045 Vehicle 2 Damage and Estimate: Left side of trailer, landing gear area. $100.00
