We might like to think that we are in the modern age and everything around us is 'cutting edge'.......perhaps much pf opur day top day 'stuff' is........but without much of todays technology and far less power than your average smart phone man went out in to space and landed on the moon (importantly he came back too) - man also also flew aircraft like the SR71 Blackbird higher and faster than any other aircraft of the day.
Not forgetting more humble passenger air travel (for those who could afford it) there was mach 2 Concorde that only very few of the fastest fighter jets of the day could keep up with using re-heat and running out of gas after only a few minutes.
The 1960's saw the BAC/English Electric Lightning fighter/interceptor that could climb and accelerate vertically exceeding mach 1 up to its service ceiling and secretly way above (and something still that few aircraft today can achieve).
Jaguar E types supposedly capable of 150 mph speeds - but we all knew that many different production American cars (including Corvettes) had easily exceeded 150 mph several years previously.
Car speeds have dramatially increased over the last 50+ years but have any of the other things mentioned above really been transcended or improved upon?.........I think not!
