State tells Don to Bend Over

Used cars have exploded in value over the past couple of years for yanking tax money from people

Just ask Don Hawley, owner of two 1979 Corvettes, one that he drives and the other that he keeps for spare parts.

Since buying the parts Corvette in 2015 for a thousand bucks, Hawley has never had to pay more no more than $61 in property taxes that is, until last year, when he received a tax bill for a whopping $718.
The Kansas man tells KMBC 9 News the increase was “pretty unrealistic” for a car that has no instruments, no interior and doesn’t even run.

The Douglas County Appraiser’s Office told Hawley that the car was revalued in 2022 according to state standards, using NADA data that valued the vintage C3 at $12,100.👎

In a statement to KMBC, the appraiser’s office says Hawley received notice about the increase last May through a Notice of Value Change.
It wasn’t until Nov. 30 that Hawley contacted the office and was told of his options, which included a Payment Under Protest application with instructions on how and when to file. They also advised him to submit further documentation to correct the appraisal.

“It’s an affordable hobby,” Hawley says, “but being punished with the taxes, that’s inappropriate.”

We pay Property Tax over here (it's called Council Tax) but it's applied to buildings and land only. I know some States in the US incude other material assets in assessing Property tax and I guess Kansas is one of those. They've certainly royally shafted poor old Don!

But perhaps don't move to UK Don - council tax can be excessive - own as many cars as you want - in the future you might need to keep them in your garage to avoid the creeping congestion and future pay per mile taxation - wanna buy a new car more than £40K......then get 'hit' again.....
