Suddenly 'sloppy' gear shifter (automatic)

Hi everyone, I have a 2001 C5 Targa Auto and its been great. Been doing a lot of drives in it. Loving life!
In 2023, my shifter cable snapped when pulling on to my driveway. Replaced it with a new one.
Earlier this year (March), I was at PartsUSA getting a few new parts and it had to go for a wheel alignment, the place that did the alignment was a little rough with my shifter and snapped that one also! PartsUSA recovered the car and fitted a new shifter cable for me. Happy days.
Been great ever since... but just pulled up on my driveway again and its a little bit of back and forth to get it in, but I'm always very sympathetic with my shifter, letting it click in to each position as I put it through the box to the desired gear. But today it just felt kinda funny????
There seems to be quite a bit of 'slop' in the P position. I can go to R fine and then down to N doesn't feel like a solid click anymore. I have to wiggle it for it to find its comfortable sitting, if that makes sense?
When I shift to D, it goes in fine but again it has a noticeable amount of play, which allows me to pretty much put it back in to the N position without actually going in to N.
It just doesn't feel as nice as it has all day!

Any suggestions on what could cause this? Shifter issue? the plastic locking piece on the gearbox end of the cable?
Be great to get an idea of what to look at first.
Thanks.

I would take the knob off the shifter and check the push rod and return spring to see if degraded wear
Else maybe have to jack ass end up and make sure the shifter cable mount is not loosened up

FOUND IT!!!!!
The little plastic clip on the gearbox end had half unclipped itself. I clipped it back in, shifts normally now 👍

Any idea why this would of happened? Is there a way to not let it happen again?
Such a design flaw!!!

Yes! Thats the one.
That clip that pushes in to secure the cables length after fitment, had half come out.
I simply pushed it back in and my shifter is secure again 👍
