Next year i will have been a club member for 40 years , over that time the membership has drifted toward a drive to a show and shine , talk about how fast their car is and drive back again , which can be ok , even done that myself , but i still like a bit of action in between which a lot of members are just not up for nowadays sadly , ,,,,View attachment 20220View attachment 20221View attachment 20222View attachment 20223
Unfortunately the current logistics of taking a trip out in a vehicle with perhaps low double figure fuel consumption (or worse) is a real financial 'ball ache' for many of us. The £100+ cost of filling a tank (with the neccesary super unleaded) and the ever diminishing value of 'the pound in your pocket' (certainly for me anyway) really limits the the use of my Vette (as much as I would love to attend more events).

Over all my years of driving )let’s say fast cars) I have been to santa pod (run what ya brung) events and taken my cars down the strip, also raced around silverstone track plus other meets and not thought anything of it, as I have aged I have realised the importance of having genuine insurance that covers said events.

There is no way I would even think about doing it now without the proper insurance especially with the cost of repairs if something goes wrong and it ends up getting a fender bender. This I would imagine is at the forefront of most peoples minds now although not when we were much much younger. I bet most of the drivers I was doing it with ( we were all young) had any insurance that covered us for what we were doing.

The club used to hire Goodwood Motor circuit for the day , members could pay a fee and use the full circuit trying out their beloved machinery going as slow or as fast as they liked . Also Shoreham Airport runway , side by side drag racing in the evening , all great fun , At the Nationals last year Saturday was ment to be Santa Pod race day , Santa Pod put aside a whole area for CCCUK to park in and run up the strip if they wished......... just 3 of us turned up to run up against the clock and none to show .
So i feel upon reflection that Speedfest probably wont have any effect on The Nationals at all , it will just be the members who would have attended both events like myself who will need to make their choice.....

It was disappointing to hear so few took the opportunity to go to the Pod, I couldn't as I had things to do and I'd probably chicken out of running anyway.. On Saturday morning and most of the day the Spitfire, P51 Mustang, ME109 and the Tiger Moths were all out so maybe some decided to watch them rather than go off site? You also have to remember is was meltingly hot all that weekend so the thought of sitting in a queue with your AC turned off as per their rules doesn't sound much fun!?

🤣 Pity my old Jaguar club mate doesn`t have pilots license and Cesna there any more . I quick flip down to Brands would have been fun !!
Done that!.....When I was in a racing team, our driver owned a Cessna so we would fly in to some tracks. Great on the old airfield based circuits, but at Brands Hatch it was a field way out the back so we spent longer walking from the aircraft to the track than we had spent in the air! A racing driver at the controls of a light aeroplane is "interesting" at times too believe me!

Great cars both of them 👍 My Escort Super/Thunder saloon won the supersaloon championship in 78 and 79 , in 80 the series was changed to Thunder saloons , a cosworth was shoe horned onto the space frame and it went racing with the likes of Gerry Marshall , Tony Davies in his firenza and co , i actually saw it race at Brands , I was delighted to buy it later down the line , I have only done sprints against the clock (National A open sprint licence ), but all over inc Silverstone Grand prix circuit , I closed Brands for over an hour when the motor blew and sprayed oil everywhere.sold now sadly ..........would absolutly love to see both cars ...... stay in a beefeater and do a run what ya brung weekend sounds good maybe we could gather up anyone who may be interested in that........ mind you im 72 now but i do have the one year old who got lifetime membership this year , so im assuming there is a bit of life in me yet 😉

I am sure "interesting" barely covers it . When I was support crew on main line operations all over the UK with steam loco `Union of South Africa ` the owner John Cameron would occasionaly fly in by helocopter to the nearest airfield to join us . Being the Chairman of ScotRail at the time and an owner of a vast Highland estate he was not short of a bob or two . But being dour Scotsman I doubt his flying antics would have put Biggles in the shade .

Yes it was indeed hot but great for a grippy surface , I went up in a two man spitfire for my uuuuum 70th two years ago , flew round Isle of Wight , barrell rolls , full loop and i had control for four minutes , fantastic............. still think pitting yourself against the clock in yr beloved car at the Pod would have been a better option..........

One year Gerry Marshall brought his BIG BERTHA To The Brighton Speed Trials they sat his car and my Escort Thunder Saloon side by side , he was then in a wheel chair so did not run up but we had a good chat , Photos dissapeared with a previous wife sadly ........

If you tot up workshop rental , insurance and the MOT `s I have each year even though it doesn`t legally require and my C3 costs me the thick end of £2 grand a year before it even turns a wheel , and I only use Esso Super because its ethanol free . The daily driver averages about 17 mpg most of the time with it`s 5.7 Hemi but no point owning them if you can`t afford to drive them . A £100 + fill up is worth the smile factor though and I am poor old pensioner !! 👴

I remember watching Gerry Marshall getting what I think was his 1000th race win at Donnington, he raced three cars that day, 3 wins, a 911, Aston V8 and something else I can’t remember. Never raced against him but have ended up alongside a few greats. Got overtaken like I was standing still by Barry Williams at Oulton Park once. He was in his 70s then so I’m sure @buzbee you’ve still got it.

A Santa Pod trip would be brill.
