New here - questions on importing a C7 Vette

Hi All!

Currently living in the US but planning to return to the UK somewhere around May. I have a 2019 C7 Vette that I'm planning to bring along.

I've been reading a few posts and would welcome the opinions of those more experienced than me in importing vehicles into the UK.

From what I understand, because I've lived and owned the car in the US for more than a year, I would be exempt from taxes - would this mean all customs duty and vat? would there be any additional taxes / costs I would not be exempt from?

In terms of making the car road legal in the UK, it seems the only changes that would have to be made to the car are the addition of turn signals on the side of the car (mirrors?) as well as fog lights in the rear? Is this correct? If so, can I get some recommendations on where I could have this work done?

Thanks!

Hi Tenebrus, Think you are right, should be able to bring the car into UK without any Duty/VAT to pay. Front side indicator lights in the side vents is an option and also seen them in the front reflectors position. I'd give ShipMyCar a call to get a quote on costs:

You are correct. As you are returning to the UK, you can bring your own vehicle with you free from duty and VAT.
I always use Hill Shipping, and have done so for 15 years. Excellent service and very competitive prices.

Is there a limitation re. it it was your vehicle in the 'States, yes you don't pay the duties ect.......but need to keep the car for a specific time span (or still have to pay?)

It used to be if you owned the vehicle in the US for a year and it was titled to you for the year, you could bring it to the UK free of tax as it’s classed as a personal possession. You then had to keep it in the UK for 6 months, but I think that’s been changed. ( the you keeping it bit)

Thanks everyone. This is really helpful.

Anyone know of a reliable place where I could have the blinker / fog lights work done?

If you use someone like Ship My Car to import the car, they will be able to deal with the conversion. (and they'll even throw in a free CCCUK Membership as they are supporters of the Club). Ask for Nick Roach.

Just did a quick online quote and seems like a really good option. Thanks! Hopefully you'll have a new member in the near future ;)

I did not know that - and I had my C3 imported by them as well. Drats!

....and you'll need some sort of ghastly front number plate mount. But still, it could be worse - you should see the ones on C8!

If those front side windows are tinted you'll almost certainly need the tints removed to get registered in UK.

Yes, once the light meter is put inside it will fail. We got caught that way on a Camaro we imported. Luckily the chap testing it allowed me to remove it while he waited and re tested it for me, otherwise I would have had to rebook another test and pay again. It always depends on the tester.

Hi everyone

Thanks to all for your help and advice. Took a total of six months and one day since I dropped it off in New Jersy, but it finally made it's way to the UK and back to my hands:

I ended up going with SMC for the shipping process - I think it includes free membership with CCCUK - how do I go about activating it?

Speak to Ship my Car and they will send your details to the club membership secretary who will do the rest.
Welcome to the CCCUK.

Excellent/Very Nice!! If by any chance you fancy a new/unused Chevy accessory "Aero" front number plate mounting for a very cheap price, send me a PM message ;)
