Something else to consider ?

Being an area rep, I'm always on the look out for new members, and have spoken to many other Corvette owners at shows that are not CCCUK members, after speaking to them for an hour or so and eventually getting round to the question, would you consider joining the club?
The response i normally get is, i wouldn't join that club, I went to a CCCUK meeting once, and they criticised my Corvette for not having the correct wheels or the stitching on the seats is the wrong colour, the bolts haven't got the correct markings on. So the thing to consider is. Please don't criticise other people's choices, we are all individuals and some of us like to take an alternative route, so think before you speak, and it will make my job a whole lot easier.
Thanks.

Hi it's funny you should say that as in the early 1980's i had a corvette and Trans Am and both were in a show at the NEC Birmingham now that is a big car show and only the best were chosen to represent the club you were in , at that time mine was the American Auto Club (i was one of the first few to join). The corvette i had had just undergone a complete new paint job that was top notch ,while i was there 2 guys from the corvette club (of which i am now a member as you probably know) came along to look at it and i overheard them say that it could do with a complete respray plus a few other distasteful comments now this was because i had had a very tasteful custom job done (my car my decision) which won a lot of shows because of it ,these 2 guys then came up to me and asked why don't you join the corvette club my reply was i just overheard your comments and that is the reason why i wont join your club (well that's a nice way of putting my reply).
My point is i totally agree with you about don't criticize other peoples choice of what they do to their car or cars it does not go down very well however innocent the comments might be, a club should embrace all lovers/owners of a truly wonderful car which is the Corvette . I am glad to say the club has changed from those early years and i have found all the members and followers of the Corvette that i have met very nice friendly people and i am glad i have joined.

I totally agree with comments above, my friend purchased a C3 he immediately spent good money on wheels, interior and respray etc., all to a high standard and total original spec - I suggested he joined the Club, we took the car to one of the Nationals and after that he was not interested in taking part in anything to do with the Club, much later on in time he told me that at the Nats someone came up and picked detailed fault with his Vette.
For me the Club is not about Corvettes it is about Corvettes and people and the camaraderie involved between like minded friends.
There is no camaraderie in criticism.

Exactly gentleman, you have grasped what I'm trying to say, if you cannot make a good comment, make no comment and move on.

Interesting that you say this, my car is far from standard and I'm happy with that and appreciate it's not to all tastes. Couldn't care less.......BUT....

Shortly after I bought it I tried to take it to a very well known Corvette garage, and was told by the owner TO MY FACE "Everything you do to a Corvette that takes it away from standard reduces it's value". Funnily they never came back to me about the work I wanted doing depsite several chasers!

That hasn't put me off the whole community though and on the whole this forum is far more welcoming than some of the others out there, but given the level of modification done to these cars in the US it baffles me where this snobbery comes from I'm the UK.

I've had several old American cars in my time but only one of them was modified from standard, a pro-street '79 Camaro Z28. I would never modify my current '71 Stingray but I absolutely loved that Z28 because I could do whatever I wanted to it without worrying about maintaining its originallity, I took it to lots of different events and never heard any snobby or negative comments at all, perhaps the Corvette scene is different some some reason?

I don't think it's any different Nick from other clubs in fact a national American Auto Club show i went to with my Trans Am in the early 1980's the judge,s came round and said the alternator plus other stuff is wrong i replied what are you judging it for he said originality i replied it should be judged in the custom class as most of it was custom, it then went on to win 2 trophies in the custom class. My point is perhaps not all cars are judged in the correct class and i do know that it's difficult for whoever is judging if the owner is not around to answer any questions the judges may have.Snobs i don't like or deal with and from my experience the Corvette club probably had that tag in the early years but as i have said in my previous post i have encountered none of that now all i have met are down to earth and friendly people .
