Gear shift spring

My 1970 4 speed manual gear shift is missing the reverse lever gate return spring, I constantly need to make sure it's pushed down when driving in case I select reverse instead of 1st.
Rather than ordering up a selection of random springs, can anyone give me the dimensions of it so I can order the correct one up?

Given the age of the vehicle (and perhaps use/mileage) maybe consider an upgrade to a Hurst shifter. I did this years ago and the precision and shift quality improvement was amazing. Hurst shifter attaches to actual gearbox (rather than gearbox cross-member sub assembly). This further improves shifting (especially when more rigid engine/transmission mounts are used. Be prepared for a 4 figure bill. This guy (Shifters) takes things even further a re-engineers the shifter mechanism with precision closer fitting shims for an even better quality 'feel'.

Thanks Roscobbc - I have been told that this upgrade to a Hurst is a game changer & agree that this is worth considering but as I'm new to all this and my 'to do' list is growing, I'm happy to simply buy a spring to overcome this issue for now.

Hi Phil, you’ve just reminded me I was going to see if I still had my old shifter…..but as I thought - unfortunately it did get chucked! Not much demand for a worn out shifter!
You could work out what diameter the spring needed to be, and from memory it’s a couple of inches long, and quite strong.
btw a Hurst upgrade is only a game changer if your existing shifter is worn and not nice to drive.

I've just realised that I still have my old stock shifter somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and check-out/measure the spring.
