Being a 96, at this moment in time the car will attract import duty @10% and VAT @20%. Doing a quick calculation it works out around the £38k mark landed in the UK.

In a few months time in 2027 that rate will fall to duty @0% and VAT @5% as the car will be 30 years old.

A much better option for importation into the UK.

So in theory you could buy it now, store it in the USA for a bit, then import it to UK for much less? Cool.

Yes. Once a vehicle turns 30 years old the reduced duty and VAT rates apply. So even by the DVLA’s / governments sometimes weird way of calculating age, in 2027 a 1996 car is/over 30 years old.
I say 2027 because if it arrived in 2026 but not registered until 2027, you never know with the DVLA. They do make up their own rules where money concerned.

Car $35K @1.30 =£26900. Shipping say £2k makes it £28900 landed. Duty @10% is £2890 making it £31790 then £6358 VAT roughly £38k.

It’s the 10 + 20 % that really kills importing cars under 30 years old nowadays. Yes, that rate has always been there, but combined with the now high prices US cars fetch at home in the states, low pound to dollar rates and high shipping costs, it’s all stacked against the UK buyer.

Relief is in the 30+ year exemption. No duty and. VAT at 5%
