In your case, a DTC of 44 means the left side of the engine is running too lean
I would know more if you had a OBD-I scanner like the one I pointed to in a post above

In the blind,
Could be the left O2 sensor
Some type of air or exhaust leak on the left side
If the engine has fuel injectors, then a dirty or weak fuel injector
