C5 MOT

Thank you shorty.

Anglia Tyre & MOT as you know are even closer to me so I will pop in when I am next passing and have a word with them, did they use the rolling road for your brake test.

They say every day is a learning day I spoke to Ian Goss today, Ian Goss Vehicle Services and he was very helpful, although he has not known of any damage to cars with limited slip differentials, there is no reason why I can’t ask for decelerometer test as they can’t use the rolling road brake test on 4 wheel drive cars.

Oneball thank you for your second reply I now know why you said all MOT stations would need a Tapley Meter.

I ordered a Euro spec C5 Corvette from Germany so won’t be a UK C5 Corvette if there is such a C5 Corvette I don’t know, although GM made UK and Japan headlights T85, I will bore you with that later.

Teamtzr1 I am no mechanic as this post shows, but I think the idea of a limited slip differential is both wheels are always able to rotate but can rotate at different speeds if road conditions dictate, unlike a fixed axle, so when one wheel is forced to stop rotating the week point is the limited slip differential.

There is actually a prescribed set of tools for the MOT test even pokey things. When they check for rust they use a specific pick/hammer they dont use an old screwdriver from the back of the tool box.

Hi shorty thank you again.

I am sure your MOT would have been done with a Tapley/decelerometer and I will explain why.

It was a coincidence my daughter who lives in Frating asked me yesterday if I could drop her to Colchester train station because she was going to Liverpool Street to meet work colleagues for their Christmas drink.

On the way back I thought I would pop into Anglia Tyre & MOT who I believe is run by a father and son team and have a chat, I met Jay a great bloke who seemed very conscientious, after talking to Jay he gave me complete confidence that they do not nit-pick, they just give you a fair MOT and that’s all you can ask for, plus they own American cars so real enthusiasts.

I asked Jay about the slip differential question, he told me all the MOT tester he knows would never put a slipped differential car on the rolling road they always use their Tapley/decelerometer and he showed me their Tapley/decelerometer.

I asked about four wheel drive cars Jay said that applies to MOT stations that have front and rear rollers so then they use the Tapley/decelerometer but Anglian Tire and MOT just have the one set of rollers so they do not have a problem with four wheel drive cars.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for letting me know.
I was really happy with them, I also have a Mustang with a LSD which I will be taking to them when the MOT is due.
I have only recently moved up here too, so It's good to find a garage you can trust with our cars.

My C3 has LSD and even though I haven't had an MOT done for a few years I can't ever recall any issues when the MOT testers took retardation readings from each rear wheel when on the individual left and right rollers........TBH it only take a few seconds per wheel.......surely the very design of the LSD allows for that.
Now if the rear end had one of the drag racers favourites......a Detroit Locker........ slipping clutches are changed for with gear operated positive locking.......no slippage .......just engaged or 'open'. Now that would be fun on MOT rollers.

Same experience here Ross….my C3 was always tested on the rollers without issue. When my wife had a 4WD Audi TT they tested that on the road though - presumably more concern about the drivetrain on a permanent 4WD

My first 'car' was a Berkeley T60 three wheeler with 328 cc two stroke twin and two wheels up front/front wheel drive. One wheel in rear. First MOT tester used a Tapley meter.......pulled up the rear wheel operating handbrake which 'locked-up' the rear wheel........but the car still kept going and couldn't register the required retardation figure on the meter! - but he had to pass it. It wasn't going to improve on locking-up the rear wheel!

I have a 2004 C5 Corvette with just over 3000 miles which I have had from new and has had very few MOT’s, I have now moved 70 miles away from my old MOT test garage.

My MOT tester is extremely good especially with more classic cars, he would not put my C5 Corvette on the rolling road, I never asked why, stupid I know, he used a decelerometer tester.

I found a very good local garage and had my daily driver MOT test done, I asked why my last MOT garage would not use the rolling road, he said if the car has a limited slip differential you could possibly cause damage to the limited slip differential.

I had to Google if a C5 Corvette has a limited slip differential and they do.

I asked Google the question below.

(Yes, an MOT brake test on a roller brake tester can damage a slip differential, especially on older friction-plate limited slip differentials (LSDs). The rollers can force one wheel to stop while the other turns, creating unequal forces that can stress the LSD. It is safer to inform the tester beforehand or request a decelerometer test, which uses a G-meter instead of rollers.)

I know all C5 Corvettes need an MOT, have any member had a problem or am I worrying over nothing.

I am out of the country for 3months when my MOT runs out, I think VOSA could take a dim view of me driving 70 miles just get an MOT.

My 17 year old grandson wants me to MOT my Corvette so I better do as I am told.View attachment 32106

Thank you in advance Michael.
Lovely car . Any DVSA approved MOT station will be good to test it regardless of distance . Just ring and book Ask if they can run the Rbt rollers together , no issue with lsd and seeing as it’s not 4wd either.
