This was how to kick off the 1970`s . Me and my mates with our `custom ` painted Ford Thames van named Mavis waiting in the France / Spain border control queue in 1971 . I am sitting n the ground on the right . Note the FHC Jaguar E Type complete with tow hitch and speed boat !!! Those were the days ! 😄
After many years of going our separate ways we all linked up at one of the lads funerals a few months ago . What a trip down memory lane that was , and I was the only one without a full head of hair ! Bastards , hate `em !!!

In school up until 1976, but I certainly remember the 1970’s brown. Who on earth would order a chocolate ( I’m being polite) E-Type. Plenty did tho.
Loved platform shoes/boots. Kipper ties, high waistband Lionel Blair’s in brown or beige. Loved um
I recall sitting with buddies in the (long gone) ABC cinema in South Street Romford in the 70's. Can't remember the film but we were sitting half way up the seating area in the upper circle. The stairs were surprisingly steep and not made any easier by the very thick carpeting covering the edges on the steps. This was in the era of platform boots and shoes. There was a quiet part of the film and a bloke (obviously wearing platforms) got out of his seat at the bottom of the circle to go to the bog at the top of the circle. The whole cinema heard (during this quiet part of the film) the clump, clump, clump from his boots as he (perhaps less than carefully) made his way up the steps.
A few minutes passed and as he returned from the khazi the whole cinema heard the same thing........clump, clump, on the first few steps.......and then he slipped and went down the whole staircase, bang, clump, bang, clumpity, clump, clump clump in quick succession down to the lower part of the circle.
After the anti-climax of the silence and then loud footsteps in the middle of the film the whole cinema broke-out in uncontrollable laughter, spoiling the film.........but it was worth it. Probably the funniest thing I ever experienced

I remember buying (and being the first in our bunch) to buy a pair of Lionels when they first came on the market - from Tony Mann menswear in Ilford. Wasn't the 1970's though more like '68/'69 - they were more like tapered-in at the knee and not too wide (unlike the more extreme 'bell bottoms' that followed later)

Didn`t bother with posh shoes in late 60`s and early 70`s . It was faded Levies and old trainers or bare feet for me and the lads as can be seen the photo . After 3 weeks of traveling around France and Spain on hot sand and hot pavements the soles of of mt feet were like like leather and could stub a fag end out without feeling a thing ! We did avoid man hole covers though when it was 113 Degrees Fahrenheit in southern Spain though !!

Remember the moccasin kits you could buy, using the leather laces provided shape them all up. Used to wear them for a few years but the 'transfer over to 500cc AJS from a Vespa GS scooter needed more robust footwear to kick the bike over and shift gear. Ex Army boots with 'Blakey' metal studs over the soles and metal tips on the heels did the job. Also gave an interesting visual display at night if you dragged your 'Daisys' on the tarmac.
