“You can run, but you can’t hide.”
That’s what Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) posted Wednesday to announce they seized a 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 after hitting a patrol car and taunting police.
CMPD says its Operation SCARLET (Stolen Car and Recovery Law Enforcement Team) started looking into a possibly stolen or cloned Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that had fled from traffic stops multiple times in the Char-Meck area.
SCARLET detectives found the owner’s identity and a social media account with video of the vehicle speeding away from officers. It was determined that the car was not stolen.
On March 28, officers found the Corvette and the driver, 21-year-old Carlos Clark, tried to run a traffic stop. The vehicle intentionally hit a CMPD patrol vehicle and sped off, according to authorities.
“Very few people have these fast cars even though many would want them,” said Dr. Sara Levens, a psychologist and associate professor at UNC Charlotte.
Clark was arrested that day, and his home was searched with a warrant.
At the home, detectives say they found and seized the following:
Some of the videos show him riding beside police and then speeding away, posting things like, “cruising with my buddy,” referencing police.
“This is the thrill and it’s not thrilling unless other people are seeing you take all of the chances, and why this is happening on social media is being a part of that shared experience, being in the know,” said Levens.
Clark is facing several charges, including felony flee and elude arrest, reckless driving and hit and run.
Levens explains what makes people want to watch Clark’s social media videos. One of them on TikTok has 1.5 million views.
“Watching it they can experience many of those things without any of the risk factors involved in sort of getting caught or anything like that,” said Dr. Levens.
Clark is facing several charges:
Jail records show this isn’t the first time Clark was arrested.
Cornelius Police charged him last May with driving while his license was revoked and fleeing and eluding arrest with a motor vehicle.
