Heatwave collateral damage.

For some years I've had a Battery Booster pack for those times when a battery needs a little support to start the car.....

It doesn't get used very often but recent dodgy starting on one of my cars prompted me to dig it out. On removal from its storage case I noticed that the top cover had been pushed off, caused I discovered, by a rather bloated battery cell.....

These booster packs typically use lithium-ion cells to store the charge and high temperature can cause the electrolyte to break down and release gas which gets trapped within the cell - which is what appeared to have happened to mine. This is not reversible and a swollen cell can easily catch fire or release noxious gas, so it was fortunate I discovered it when I did.
I kept the booster in a shed next to my garage which is not frequented that often. During the recent heatwave daytime temperatures in the closed shed probably reached the high 40's or even 50 degrees C.
I've replaced my booster....

...and will in future be more careful where I store it!

Lithium based batteries are always a constant concern for R/C modellers (being the primary power source for aircraft. cars. boats etc). Most users keep the cells in special fire containing bags in a fire resistant container out in the garden well away from the house. Even charging can be hazardous - again enthusiasts will often charge-up outside of the house.
