Internally Regulated Alternator

Back in 2011 I replaced my original 55A alternator with a 63A internally regulated alternator from CK

My original ammeter works as normal. Something to look out for, depending on how your alternator is mounted, is that the self-regulated alternator is 'fatter' than the original and in my case it contacts the valve cover before I can move it far enough in to remove the belt from the pulley. I tried using a next-size-up belt, but this made contact with the nose of the power steering pump, so I now have to slacken the water pump pulley to change the alternator belt.

Be careful using Ammeter with a new alternator esp if new alternator ampage is much higher than original As it will burn out the Ammeter gauge !!

I don't know about other generations, but in C2s (and presumably C3s?) I think it it is safe to say that because the ammeter does not 'see' the output of the alternator, changing to a higher-output alternator should not cause any damage. This article from a 1993 issue of the NCRS Corvette Restorer gives a good explanation of how the C2 ammeter works.
