You are so right. Even the most basic low end car has so much electronic trickery that will be impossible for the average person to repair/replace.

Which considering the largest portion of a cars car’s carbon footprint is its production this “progress” surely isn’t green. The ever ballooning size, weight and complexity of modern cars combined with the inevitable irreparable nature that makes them virtually disposable items is entirely at odds with the supposed aims of the industry.

A friend of mine complained recently that she couldn't understand why she could see so little through the rear window of her new car even though it seemed very similar externally to its older predecessor. While glass sizes haven't changed dramatically, what you can see through them has. Much rear window glass these days, while not significantly smaller than earlier models, now has a significant 'black border' that hides structural metalwork. Externally the window looks much larger than it does internally.
Interestingly 'Harry's ' report shows that Jaguar seem to be extending the principle to complete apertures - particularly the rear doors. What appear externally to be normally proportioned doors actually hide very restricted access - a triumph of form over function!
It also appears that in the event of an (electronic) control screen failure, you will have a completely undrivable car, Such is progress.....;)
