There’s a cable that connects the gear linkage to the key. If you look at the bottom of the steering column in the engine bay it conducts to a pivot. Give it a waggle and the key should come out. Then you’ll need to adjust it.

I have the level ( button) that Jukebox refers to on my 1980 . Does the steering wheel turn or is locked ? Try giving the wheel a turn against the locking mechanism at same time as trying to remove the key .
