Just read that lotus maybe switching production from UK to USA
Sad news, My family knew Colin Chapman well, as his first cars were built in Crouch End ( north London) where we lived. I remember his workshops by Crouch End junior school as some of my friends went there. I went to Roksley which was our other junior school.
My uncle still has 4 Lotus cortina’s garaged near his old lock up’s
Sad day for British car manufacturers if they do move.

And now they make electric SUV`s , what`s the world come to ??? It hardly fits in with Colin Chapman`s mantra of " add lightness " by lugging half a ton of batteries about !

They were a big player in the C4 ZR1 programme, much to the annoyance of many Americans, both personal and business wise. Their involvement has been well documented.
The test mules ended up in scrap yard in/around the Norfolk area. That’s where Keith Beschi found his test mule that they restored I believe.

I would go as far as to say that the ZR1 development work could be described as their best effort to date (in terms of manufacturing excellence). Makes you wonder.....if GM had got some costs out of the engine by manufacturing 'in house' and in far greater numbers with subsequent later development and perhaps 'power adders' like blowers and turbos where it would have gone in terms of an SBC alternative.

Lotus has been struggling financially for a long time and the potential move to the States is obviously an attempt to offset the further economic burden of Trump's tariff legislation. Given that these tariffs have been largely targeted at China it's interesting that Chinese owned Lotus (Geely International, a Chinese Automotive Group owns 51% of Lotus) is seeing this as a back-door opportunity to dodge the tariff handicap.

Wouldn't be surprised if local to planned USA re-location area has various incentives and grants available to allow Geely to establish a foothold in the USA (although given Trumps abject hatred for Chinese manufacturers - perhaps he'll personally put a kibosh on it?)
On a more positive and historic note one would imagine that if Geely hadn't invested in Lotus it would by now be long gone. Strikes me that the demise of Lotus has been a long time coming, especially as they increasingly manufactured higher and higher spec' vehicles l,that were/are miles away from their traditional origins.
I think that part of the downfall of Lotus and other specialist low volumn car manufacturers is the British car buyers mindset towards cars from BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and the like. These companies have been carefully marketing their brands to UK (and USA) buyers for many years, indoctrinating potential purchasers how good the quality, technology, performance, driving experience of the vehicles is...........advertise for long enough over many decades to grandfather, father, son and daughter and it becomes almost endemic midset belief that you have to own one of these vehicles (much as in the opposite way that UK manufacturered cars are/were rubbish - perhaps true in some cases - certainly not in others)

Hard to relate that Lotus played a major part in the development of the C4ZR1 quad cam engine.
But as we know, GM owned Lotus from 1986 to 1993. The engines were built by Mercury Marine:
