I've had the water pump off my 1992 C4 to replace a failed Optispark unit. There was some oil around the unit that had leaked from the water pump drive shaft seal (but not enough to cause the failure of the Optispark.... it was simply failing when the engine was up to temperature).
There is quite a bit of play in the water pump drive shaft where it emerges from the timing chain cover. The play seemed more with the seal removed.
I fitted a new seal and the play is much less but this is a seal not a bearing.
How much play is acceptable? What is the likelihood of the bearing on the other end of the shaft being on its way out.
The car has only done 50,000 cossetted miles.
Does the club have an LT1 expert amongst us or know a man / woman who is?
