Remote Key Fobs

Hi All
My previous car was a 1998 UK spec C5 coupe.
For some reason I retained one of the key fobs which was working fine when I sold the car
My current car is a 1997 USA spec C5 for which I do not have any key fobs
From the limited research I have done it would appear that the USA and UK fobs are different
So the question I have is can I just buy a key fob (Ebay ? ) and program it to my car or does it need to go to a dealer to be programmed ?
Anybody successfully managed the above ?
Is anybody interested in my key fob ? - either to buy or swap for the one I want
Thanks

The UK and US versions use different frequencies, it's the same for all cars. US uses 315 MHz whilst Europe & Japan use 433 MHz. As far as I'm aware you can just buy a remote and program it, but remember to buy the right one (frequency and model year). I found the following instructions online. I've not tried them, but assume they are correct.

These instructions work for all 1997 to 2004 Corvettes even though the 97-00 and 01-04 remotes were different.
  1. Insert the key in the ignition and turn it to the "On" position.
  2. Push the "Reset" button on the Driver Information Center (DIC).
  3. Push the DIC "Options" button until you see a blank display.
  4. Push and hold the "Reset" button for 2 seconds.
  5. Push the "Reset" button when you see "FOB Training" in the DIC. You'll then see "LK + UNLK 1st FOB" displayed.
  6. Push and hold the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the remote at the same time. Hold them for about 15 seconds. Once the remote is programmed, you'll see "FOB Learned" in the DIC.
  7. Repeat step 6 to program additional remotes.

How much would you ask for the key fob? Hopefully it might work on my 2000 year model.Ii think the fobs were for 1997 to 2000. Then 2001 to 2004 if I remember correctly.

If your car is Euro spec then the fobs remained the same throughout the C5 model, they only changed in 2001 for the US models, so as long as you get a 433 MHz fob it will work on your UK spec car.
As for programming fobs, the instructions given above are correct and work fine: I was lucky enough to buy a new Euro spec fob a few years ago as a spare, and I had to program it to the car, worked fine and is easy to do.

Hi Robert,
sorry, seems to be some cross communication: I don't have a fob for sale, the OP Austria29 has a fob from a Euro model and I assumed you were asking him if he wanted to sell it? I was just confirming that there would be no compatibility problems with your car due to model year. (y)

I have these two fobs, had them ages, not sure what they would work with.
Didn't try them when I had my C5s.
Don't have a C5 now so I don't need them.
If anyone could shed some light on them.DSC_0073.JPGDSC_0072.JPG

I also need a couple of key fobs for a Japan import Corvette C5. If anyone can help me with what should be the right one for it. Apparently hard to come by now.

Apologies for the slow reply and thank you very much for the information - looks like I just need to buy the correct fob

Thanks Mike - How much did you have to pay for the Euro spec fob when you bought it ??

A lot, for a fob anyway - around £100 inc. shipping, import duty etc.
I found it on ebay from a US based seller, well hidden and took some finding. My car only came with 1 fob so I wanted a spare. Export spec fobs are very hard to find so I snapped it up. It was brand new and from an official Chevrolet parts supplier. They had 2, both went quickly. That was over 3 years ago now, and US spec fobs are more readily available.
If you look regularly for parts it's surprising what you can find: I bought a pair of UK spec headlights, brand new and boxed, from a German Corvette specialist for around £350 about 2 years ago. Again found on ebay.

Hi an important if you have a UK spec c5, as distinct from a Euro spec C5. They stopped selling UK spec C5s around the end of calendar 2001, may have run over to early 2002. So if the C5 was purchased via the Vauxhall dealerships 1999 -2001/2 it will be UK spec.

At the UK port of entry, shipped via Germany, Chevrolet converted them to UK spec. which was predominantly lighting and a UK security system. The security was outsourced to Toad systems; who were subsequently taken over by Scorpion (Security Systems?) who retained some Toad employees.

In 2012 I contacted Scorpion and indeed spoke with an ex Toad employee and purchased a new Fob for £55.27. The learning procedure is detailed in the C5 user manual, in your glove box (?).

Cheers,
Pete

If FOB training cannot be displayed, the BCM doesn't have the RPO codes and would have to be reprogrammed with a Tech2 / Tech2win or other similar bi directional scantool
