Repaint my 79 coupe

Hi all
I have had my car coming up to two years now and during that time I have asked many questions of you guys with the experience and knowledge so here is another one.I am thinking of getting the car repainted the original colour (Black)but I am also finding the quotes (five up to now)frankly more than I can probably justify to she who must be obeyed ranging from £5000 to £10,000 and that’s with the car rubbed down and disassembled as much as can be done by me to there requirements. My question is has anyone seen the you tube films of guys (mostly American )removing the top coat of paint and sometimes primer with a razor blade type D I Y paint scraper tool before finishing with fine grit paper and blocks and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experiences with this method as it seems by far the least time consuming way to go about this task and the more I can do the less I have to pay for is my line of thought.

Nigel, I've seen lots of posts and videos of the razor blade method, paint stripper and sanding, as I'm hoping to be in a position to get my car painted next year and like you I need to keep the cost down to something I can sell to the other half! Depending on whose view you believe, they are all the "best" method. I've no experience of any of them, but I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on:)

Hot air gun and a palet knife style paint remover sometimes works still will need final block back but this is where we and any other bodyshop will tell you a repaint is all about the prep you can ruin a repaint with bad prep and basically be throwing moneydown the drain also as a general rule most bodyshops wont guaranty any paintwork where they haven't done the prep

I hear what you are kindly pointing out as almost all the body shops I have yet visited have said the same, but when working on a fairly tight budget the options of paying such a lot of money (possibly)!! Puts chaps like me right out of the running and we are left with any alternative solutions that may be out there, but thanks for your valued opinion

It is all about the prep Nigel, the prep is the foundation, I have seen a red C3 Vette that was prepped by a Corvette "alleged" specialist and then sent out for a respray - the paint was ok but the car was a mess, due to the bad prepping, looked like excess use of a chisel and a sander.
You quoted 5-10K for a paint job after you had disassembled and prepped - 10K is silly money for a paint only job.
The boys at Custom Exotics are good and worth the money ask them for a quote.
