PETALUMA, Calif. - Fire crews responded to the scene of a fire at the Petaluma Municipal Airport on Monday that destroyed a small vintage plane, according to fire officials.
The Petaluma Fire Department said a call came in around 11:42 a.m. regarding a possible explosion in a private-owned airport hangar.

The fire destroyed the hangar, the Piper J-3 Cub airplane, and a classic restored C3 Corvette.
Fire officials said crews were able to keep the fire contained to that building at the airport.

The fire was knocked down by around 11:58 a.m.

Officials said damages from the fire could exceed $150,000 and that there was an estimated $2 million in valued assets protected by responding fire units.
Units from Rancho Adobe and North Bay Fire were also dispatched to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

If USA insurance for road going vehicles has the same limitations regarding taking your car on to an airfield there's a chance that that 'cover' may be void and that a claim may need to be filed elsewhere.......

Bay City News reports that the fire apparently started after the owner of the airplane completed a flight, stored the plane, and walked out of the hangar.

“He just finished flying it, and while he was away for just a few minutes there was an explosion,” Petaluma Fire Chief Jeff Schach said.
