I had a C5 I did a lot of work on a few years ago and still have a bit of a Corvette bug. There’s however a Merc at the auction too that’s piqued my interest so I might travel down to Mathewsons this week. I quite like the colour of this car- I can do my own paint/body.

Does it look rotten below the A pillar? Not a bad MoT history but last MoT nearly ten years ago.

What’s the parts situation for C3’s?

I’d be worried about the windscreen post/a pillar.

Parts are fine, but always twice the price of say a Mustang

Most people replace old and decaying front and rear bumper assemblies with new covers.
'Reasonable' sellers will allow you to remove both front kick panels to inspect the the forward chassis mounts - no big deal just remove/loosen-up ally cill covers and kick panels can be fiddled and slipped out.
Any corrosion to chassis mounts will be obvious - also if windscreen surround is in a bad way water and rust debris will channel down in to the void behind the kick panels. This will also give you a good idea of what other critical chassis mountings may be like. To put a proper coat of paint on the car, replace the bumper covers with new (used ones will be crap too) will cost you close to the estimated guide price - add potential price paid to bits needed and you could quite likely source reasonable up and running car. The yellow L82 they are selling would have been worth looking at.......but it is not UK registered......potential issues here?

Indeed I was a little concerned about the fact the other C3 has been here a long time but oddly not registered. With the seller supposedly doing various things to it you’d really have thought they’d get the registration sorted out. Perhaps even just recently prior to selling it.

Q plate coming! (I’m just joking there but I’ve no idea if there are going to be hurdles)

Theoretically the later L82 spec' car should be the better choice if comparing like for like. If I recall L82's were all manuals? Later C3's are better appointed - probably a steel floor car - need to check that for rust. Truth is both cars are emission era vehicles with low compression, 'soft' cams and timing, so no where as quick as the earlier C3's (but eminently tunable).......also a better, quieter drive for most people.....and comparatively plentiful/less expensive to buy than earlier cars.
