Washer /wiper query

Hi all, can anyone clarify this for me? Wipers operate from the two speed wiper switch, if the wiper switch is off but the wash button is pressed, is that supposed to just pump water or does that turn on the wipers too?
Also, if the wipers are on and the knob override is turned to stop the wipers to change blades What happens if the wash button is pressed at this point ? Will that just pump water or will that re start the wipers.
Basically , I am wanting to check the washer pump is working but if pos without starting the wipers. TiA

From memory the wash is supposed to operate the wipers as well.

Remember the wiper motor is switched earth which as someone who grew up on British cars is as confusing as hell!!
