Been working on this car for 6 years now, new blueprint crate engine, wrapped in satin blue, side pipes ,van steel front and rear suspension and so much more along the way.

Always wanted a supercharger and found one albeit was missing alot of parts so had to buy another one.

Found a great classic american specialist near me and they have really helped me bring this car along šŸ˜€ shout out to Grumpys garage

Anyway here's the nearly finished project just need some wider rear wheels to help put the traction down

That’s certainly a head-turner!
I keep thinking about side pipes for my car. What make are yours and what inserts/ mufflers did you go for?

Re side pipes, ( something I’ve always loved) I think the 1969 factory one year only version are the ones to go for on a C3. To my eyes they look just right.

Side exhausts can be pretty loud depending on make. Factory C2 and C3 pipes aren’t too bad. More droney on coupes than convertibles. Early Thursh outsiders and sidekicks were about the same noise level. Hookers seemed to be louder to my ears. No idea about all the modern variants.

Problem with all side pipes whether factory or aftermarket is constriction of power output. Less an issue with lo-po engine options than HO options. Muffler inserts for Hooker or Doug's side pipes once again will restrict power output unless considering the least restrictive (and therefore loudest) muffler inserts.
Thing is.........they simply look so good don't they?

No one ever put side pipes on to increase performance, it was all about looks and possibly sound.
It was all about looking good, and they did indeed look good.
Always loved them.

I don’t think I could live with the volume of no mufflers!
Even though side pipes are 4ā€ diameter and 30ā€ long, getting an effective baffle or muffler inside them whilst maintaining a decent sized hole through the middle for exhaust gas does seem to be a challenge. Doug’s D950 muffler is their ā€œbalanceā€ of noise reduction and maintaining power. From what info I can find, they have an internal diameter of only 1.75ā€. That’s quite a reduction on the 2.5ā€ diameter normally used on a performance exhaust system (and as I’ve got at the moment) so might expect that to have some effect on power.
The STS spiral baffles get good reviews - acceptable noise reduction but with without reducing engine power. $500 pair though.

It's almost possible to run a Vette less mufflers - Vaughan Watkins runs an underfloor system sans mufflers on his pro-touring C2 with (presumably) 300hp 327. Although noisy it seems controllable (with manual transmission and careful use of the gas pedal). Whereas Howard with his red C3 with (presumably) low comp 350 used to run Hooker side pipes and no mufflers. He may have muffler inserts now but it was damn noisy and certainly likely to get a 'pull'.
Most Vettes with higher output and modified engines will struggle to keep noise down without mufflers.

I imported a 1979 Anniversary Trans Am last year , when I picked it up and drove it back from Southampton boy was it loud. Went straight to my garage for a check over, yep, no mufflers, just straight through pipes. Was going to get mufflers fitted but a potential buyer loved the ā€œnoiseā€ so didn’t bother. To loud for me tho, and I’m used to side exhausts.
Possibly the difference in cubic inches? Vet 327. T/A 400. It certainly sounded louder to my ears.
