Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement 1972 Corvette

Ok Darrell, when you habe the shims in your hand I’ll send up the bearing set up tool.👍

There loads of YouTube videos showing how easy it is,
OK here is an update!! I immediately ordered and got the shims (no problem). I tried working with the garage that had previously did work on the car although not Corvette specialist. It took a lot of time and effort to get hold of them and to get a reply even after I sent them two videos on how to the work (as you suggested). After awhile they did call and we discussed. They said that they would try to look at the car at the end of January!! They are nice people but I am losing confidence in their willingness to do the work on the wheel bearings. I have gone to another local garage and they have promised to look at the videos and see if it is something they could do. Hope to hear from them shortly. I have tried the other resources that were mentioned by others in the previous comments, but these resources have not panned out. I would still like to find someone more used to working on Corvettes instead of less experienced local garages if possible. I am located near Clitheroe/Blackburn/Burnley area and could have the car transported to areas in the North or even to the Midlands if anyone has additional suggestions. Will follow up with the tool issue, as soon I know more. Thanks for the help!!!!

Not sure if this has been asked but can you remove the trailing arm assembly? also to remove the chance of a delay buy the wheel bearings and seals unless you have already done so.

Hi Guys, I have now started to pick up this project again. Unfortunately, I have had a bit of a health issue (non-covid) for the last several months that has totally consumed my time and put me in the hospital. I guess at seventy everything starts to breakdown!!

Latest update, I have got the wheel bearings and shims off Scott at Corvette Kingdom, he indicated he was very busy and did not have the time to do the repair, he did offer to send me two complete trailing arm assemblies. This seemed like an expensive option to buy these and then have them fitted at a local garage. At the time I was trying to work with a local garage who had worked on the car previously to fit the wheel bearings by trying to rent/borrow the tools to fit them (see note from Corvette above who offered to send the required tool).

I have now come to a belief that to get this done, I need to find a garage that works on Corvettes and the proper tools somewhere in the UK, perhaps just about anywhere in the UK rather than focusing on the North. I am willing to have the car transported to any far flung location in the UK!!

I have no luck or success with any of the several garages or individuals recommended so far. I guess, I would have hoped with the number of Corvettes in the UK and the common issue with rear wheel bearing replacement this would not have been the task that it has become. I am sending out an SOS to anyone who can give me a recommendation and contact for a garage that can replace my wheel bearings. As always your help is greatly appreciated.

If I had known then what I know now, I'd have bought a couple of the complete heel bearing & hub assemblies (sans trailing arms) from Scott 10 years ago! Swapping them in the trailing arms is a relatively simple job and would have saved me money in the long run. Given the cost of taking/shipping the car somewhere, it might have been a better option for you?

But, Gavin will no doubt see you OK!

Update on wheel bearings: I finally connected with Gavin Roe of EMC Performance. Fellow Corvette Forum member ROSCOBBC had recommended Gavin but I had trouble connecting up with him. After a posting on this thread Gavin contacted me and we set up a plan to have the car transported to him. We set a date and the car was transported to him. I am happy to say the work was done quickly and very professionally. He knew exactly what to do and sent videos and pictures of his work as he went along. He called several times to explain exactly what he was planning on doing. I am not the most technical and most of it went over my head, but he was happy to explain. I got the car back with in only a few days and it runs great! I highly recommend Gavin to everyone. There is a bit of sun now coming through the window and I am off to the grocery store (lockdown rules) in the Corvette. Going to the grocery store has not been this much fun for a long while!!!!!!

I'm glad you got this sorted out. I've heard a lot of good things about Gavin at EMC over the years and have conversed with him occasionally. Unfortunately, he's a bit far from us now!
