Hi Daniel, many thanks for your brilliant suggestion. So much easier, almost certainly better and probably cheaper too.
I have found the rest of the hardware I need to complete the job. The lock surrounds are being painted so should be able to finish the compartments by the end of the week.

I removed and put some rust treatment on my lock surrounds as they were quite rough. I then cleaned and sanded them smooth followed by a matt black rattle can.
Mine were black when I got it, I notice yours are colour coded, I wonder if mine were supposed to be colour coded as well?
Thinking about it mine originally had a black interior so maybe they were the original surrounds?
I guess if I can find out what the interior blue is I should correct mine?

The original ones on my car were definitely colour coded to the interior - so mine were bright red although very rusty. As far as correcting it, I think that's up to you. I was tempted to leave the new surrounds in the original metal 'colour' unpainted because I thought it looked quite good but realised that they would probably get rusty without a coat of lacquer or something and so decided to paint them in the original red which is close enough to mini chilli red that you can get off the shelf. Here's the end result before putting in the car.
