I should image your car got a lot of interest.…the new car on the scene!!
Did the gears popping cause you a major problem on your runs? Are you happy with how it ran otherwise?

Yep lots of attention.
Yes, made corners really difficult and I also really don’t like the way the Hurst shifter is really strongly spring to 3/4. It makes the change to 1/2 really a lottery. I don’t really know how it handled as I couldn’t concentrate on that.

Ah that’s a shame and frustrating. [Gear] teething problems.
Hopefully you had fun driving it to and from Shelsley, even if the runs were hampered.

It'll be the 'beam breaker' that triggers the light recording the time of your climb. Did you manage to get a decent run at the hill in spite of the shift problems Tim?

No but I still did a 39sec with a bad start, holding it in gear and pootling round corners so its got promise. Fastest saloon/sports car in the championship was a BDA Escort at 35 or 36 I think.

Quick question for those with a manual box; is the standard 4 speed shifter sprung across the gate or just free?

Thanks both. Irrespective of the gearbox issues I don’t like the strong springing on the Hurst shifter. I’m sure it’s great at the drag strip for a quick change from 2-3 but going from 3-2 isn’t nice.

Although unrelated to your problem Tim, I'm starting to have jumping out of first and third problems with my stock shift. The shifter is starting to hit the console plate before fully selecting gear. This is a relatively common C3 problem usually caused by wear in the shift linkages or in my case possibly because I've replaced the shift console and it may not be quite as far forward in the car as before. You can just see dings in this piccie where the shifter is hitting the plate....

I do have a new stock shifter kit with new rods, levers and bushes to install but it's a job that needs working inside and under the car with very limited access and so far I haven't been able to work up enough enthusiasm to tackle it.

My shift existing levers are double drilled though.....

short shift.jpg.

....so i could simply re-connect the rods to the inner holes and convert to 'short shift'. This doesn't get rid of wear problems but it would overcome the gear engagement problem short-term - and I think access may be easy enough for my present level of enthusiasm....;). No sure how comfortable I'd be with the feel of the short shift though.

Why not change the spring loading to the opposite direction? - can't ever see how a stock shifter will ever have tje same level of precision that a Hurst offers.

Could do. Don’t really see the difference between a Hurst and the standard one. They work in the same way.

Box and engine out. It’s eaten the clutch plate and the pressure plate looks terrible

Clutch pressure plate is too light for the output of your engine
Does not look like the pressure plate has enough clamping force unless the clutch pedal is not releasing the throw out bearing
away from fingers of pressure plate causing the slipping ?

Lightweight flywheel setup will cause engine RPMS to spin up real quickly and torque up fast

I'd look at a custom clutch really designed for that engine and flywheel, dual or triple disc design
Why I mentioned in another post like a Tilton or McLeod
Need high clamping pressure plate

Dual For C3 800 HP
or
Handles up to 1,000 HP
OR
Ball Buster & Bank Account

Im sure it’s not that as there’s no slip and that clutch is rated to over 600 ftlbs. Its the heaviest clutch I’ve ever come across so it might get change for a twin plate anyway. I’ve checked the clutch release and it’s ok. Too weak a clutch wouldnt explain the gearbox issue either and I get the feeling they’ve got to be related.

@teamzr1 whats your experience of sintered clutches? I’ve avoid them due to bad experience in the past as they don’t like normal moving around paddocks and on/off trailers.

Please explain what a sintered clutch is ?

This sort of friction plate

Rather than these

PS Didn’t mean to discount your opinion on the clutch not being up to the task. I meant to write “I’m not sure” rather than “I’m sure it’s not”.
